What's this?

72Burban on Mon August 13, 2007 11:58 AM User is offline

Year: 1972
Make: Chevy
Model: C-10
Engine Size: 350
Refrigerant Type: R-134
Country of Origin: United States

What is this and what should be in it? it is empty right now. I thought it was a drier.

That is an accumulator. I think the 72 should have a receiver/drier. It looks a little different than that.

It's an accumulator-drier. There is a bag of desiccant powder in the bottom. When the system is running it will contain a mixture of liquid refrigerant, gaseous refrigerant, and oil, but unless you have x-ray vision there's no way to confirm that.

If you intend to run R134a in a 1972 model the desiccant bag in the original one is likely to fall apart, and cause a lot of trouble. You need to get a recently manufactured one that is labeled as R134a compatible.

thanks, it came in a box of parts I bought. Caps still on, never used. I am trying to install a used hot rod ac unit, but I did not get a bracket for the small block. Very frustrating. So this is just something that was laying around and I didn't know if I could get any use out of it our not.
