Blower motor 1993 Astro Van

Ace Barker on Sat August 25, 2007 7:38 PM User is offline

Year: 1993
Make: Chevrolet
Model: Astro
Engine Size: 4.3
Refrigerant Type: R134a

AC works fine but the fan motor switch has four positions. It only works on the 3rd and 4th. I have heard a resistor is the problem with this. Where does the resistor pack live?

Thanks!

I'm not positive, but I think it's in the housing that your heater core and evaporator are in.

It is after the blower motor...have a good pic of one, just can't find it... Anyway, the below pic is of an astro, look in the area pointed to..Can't miss it, several wires going to it, held into the heater box by two screws..Hope this helps..

Same old story, resistor pack is made of thin nichrome wire normally held by unplated brass rivets to a phenolic board. Rarely have found corrosion between the nichrome and the brass rivets, is a special solder flux for that to get a good connection, would be nice if the OE's would use that. Other rare problem is in the resistor pack connector itself, with corrosion. This is an open circuit.

More typically what happens is the wick in the blower motor dries up and the shaft rusts to the bearing, motor still kind of runs, but draws huge amounts of current, and the resistor pack will burn up the nichrome resistor to a crisp causing, you guessed it, an open circuit. If you find this, better plan on replacing the blower motor or the same thing will happen again. Most have a 30 ampere fuse, but the resistor back burns up well before that fuse will blow, same thing with the solid state motor control modules, except, those are slightly more expensive to replace.

Thanks everyone. From the photos and notes, I think I have found it. Its labeled Indak #52462693. I will try and get one this week. It appears to have a couple of screws to remove from the top and lift it out.

If it blows, I should probably replace the blower motor. This van is in pretty decent shape fir 196K and we keep patching her up.

Thanks!

If that is the original Delco blower motor with that many miles on the vehicle, and it's still purring nicely, consider having it listed in the Guiness World book of records. I'm lucky to get 90K out of these motors, and that is driving half the time with the blower off and the window rolled down.

I'm the opposite. I can't remember the last time I saw a bad blower in an Astro.

Now that I said that I'll see 3 next week.

Acdelco part number is 15-71995, they list a few, but this one is with the thermal fuse. Two screws hold it to the evap case..Hope this helps.. Photo curtesy of AcDelco

Thanks everyone! Yes it's the original blower motor. I order the part a little while ago.

Hmmm, would an Astro blower motor fit in a Caddy?
