r134a specific evaporator?

SuperRA on Tue September 04, 2007 8:19 PM User is offline

Year: 87
Make: Jeep
Model: Cherokee
Engine Size: 4.0L
Refrigerant Type: r134a
Country of Origin: United States

Hello, I have a Jeep Cherokee that I've just about completed an R134A conversion which included the following:

-AC Kits Parallel Flow Condensor
-Proper HNBR o-rings
-Proper oil
-Rebuilt compressor
-New accum/drier
-Flushed system with AC flushing solvent

My situation now is that for other reasons I have the dash diassembled and have access to the evaporator. It being the original, I figure if it is ideal to replace it, I should do it now.

My questions:

Is there an evaporator design meant for R134A much like the "Parallel Flow" condensor works better with R134A vs. R12?

What are the differences between part #s 27-33646, 54177MD, and 27-20285? Just pick the one that matches OEM or is one better for R134A?

Is there any problem using "high mileage" R134A? (contains sealers for older systems)

Thanks for any help

Would not hurt to change the evap since you'll be able to get at it, OEM design is fine..DO NOT USE anything but the proper oil, UV dye and "Virgin" R134a...Stay away from sealers or other "magic" in a can..I don't see the expansion valve on your list??

Oh yes, I forgot to list that. I changed it...

Do you think the hoses will be ok? I was thinking that if I used the high mileage R134A, it would help with the old hoses, but I may have to rethink that in light of the new info. I didn't want to sink too much $$ into this but I guess if need be...

Affter all you have spent, it would not make sense to stop and risk failure now..Do it right and you'll do it once...

After the all the effort and expense you have already put into this project to do it right; the use of this "snake oil" type of product would NOT be recommended. Think about the "high mileage" target marketing; is your vehicle worth more in scrap weight than it is as a running driver?

Yea, I'm convinced not to use the high mileage stuff, how about the R134A that already contains the UV Dye? Is that the same as using dye and plain r134a separately? Just reading in to what Chick said...

134a with just dye is OK to use.

Use just one can of 134a + dye. Put it in first, then finish charging with plain 134a. Or buy dye separately. Either way you want to have a little UV dye in there as it will make any future leaks easier to find.
