inside air problem

FLYRITE on Wed October 03, 2007 6:11 PM User is offlineView users profile

Year: 1971
Make: Chevrolet
Model: Chevelle
Engine Size: 396
Refrigerant Type: 134a
Ambient Temp: 85
Pressure Low: 27
Pressure High: 215

I have a 71 SS Chevelle. I eliminated the POA, completely flushed out each component, installed a new dryer, new compressor and expansion valve. I evacuated the system and charged it with 60 oz of 134a. The evap seems to be plenty cold enough, however I cant get the temp inside to get down below 60 daytime @ 80-85 and 50 nighttime 70-75 degrees. A friend of mine seems to think I have an airflow problem (by the way my heater core is in-op.) I was wondering if not wrapping the evap in foam before putting it back in the case could cause this inefficiency? (because I did not do it). Aside from that I don't know why I am getting this problem. The low side pipes are way cold. Also is 60 oz enough of a charge? The factory spec for r-12 was 60 oz.
I could use some help!!
Thank You!

R12 spec is 60 oz, R134a spec is about 80% of that, I would start at 70% and increase a little at a time until happy, you are definitely over serviced.

If your low side lines are cold, it would "appear" that you have heat blending in with the evap air. make sure all the blend doors are operating properly, cables on those I think, and try cutting off the heater core hoses to test. With that low side pressure, and the lines cold, it indicates that it's cooling...Hope this helps.

does it matter that the sight glass is cool? It even has a little bit of foam at max pressure. I thought too that I may be overcharged but it acts like its under. No water drips out of the evap until i shut the a/c off.
Thanks

Where is the sight glass, its cool to the touch? Do not use the sight glass as an indicator, not even on a perfect system. Its a guide but a clear glass is not proof positive any more.

You will have to check the temp drop accros the condenser, and make sure the lines into and out of the drier are the "same" temp,. If it's cooler coming out, the drier is restricted..

PS: Was a good vacuum pulled and charged into the vacuum? Foam is normal on a converted system...

Sorry about my term "cool" I meant it was the way I thought it should be. EG: not many bubbles! No! the system seems to be working OK, I did however notice exhaust smell inside the car ( I do have a slight header leak at the block) even with the max setting, so that makes me think I have engine compartment intrusion, but from where I dont know; I sealed the evap box well as far as I can see. The only cold spots in the system are post ex. valve-evap itself, and pipes to the comp. Very cold!
Thanks!

If the evap outlet is very cold...the evap is cold also.....if the vent temps are not in line....do as Chick suggested..check the heater for heat intrusion......or blend door problems....if the system is cooling...the pressures state that it is.....and the vent temps are not in line....then the problem is not the A/C mechanical system..but in the air flow/delivery area.
