1994 Ford Ranger High Side Service Port Leaking

94RX-7 on Tue April 29, 2008 10:27 PM User is offline

Year: 1994
Make: Ford
Model: Ranger
Engine Size: 2.3l
Refrigerant Type: R-134a
Country of Origin: United States

The high side service port on my 1994 Ford Ranger is leaking. How do I know it's leaking, you ask? The dust cap is covered with compressor oil and dirt, and when I took the cap off to inspect it, there was a pool of oil in the little well on the top of the port. My questions are these:

Is there a replaceable Schrader valve in the service port? If so, does it require anything other than a plain 'ol Schrader-Valve-Unscrewer-Tool to replace it? I realize I'll lose the remaining charge in the system when the valve comes out, but a fair bit of the charge has been lost anyways. I figure might as well pump it down, and recharge with all new refrigerant.

Someone may correct me on this, on the high side port at the based. Does it have an octagon looking section? If so service port is completely removed and replaced as a single unit.

So you're saying that the service port may thread into an octagon shaped fitting in the line? I didn't see any such octagon shaped fitting.

The service port itself will have a Octagon section at the bottom to use a socket like the the Mastercool item picture hear.

Look into the service port, if it has a "pin" type valve, the shrader valve is changable, if it looks like a "button" then the whole service port is changable, and not the shrader valve..Hope this helps..

Thanks for the responses, guys. I'm going to stop in at the Ford dealer today and see if I can't get a parts diagram showing how it all goes together, and order the appropriate part(s).

I went down to the Ford place earlier, and their diagrams showed that the service port was a separate, replaceable part. Bought one for the low, low price of $12, I'll put it on this weekend or next.

Any gotchas I should watch out for? I was planning on just unscrewing the old valve, smearing a bit of compressor oil on the new one, screwing it in, then pulling a deep vacuum on the system and recharging. There's still pressure in the system, so there's no need to replace the dryer or anything like that, correct?

Since you have already gone this far, why not check, replace the O-tube and accumulator.

Will be well worth the money since the system already has been through almost 14 years of use. the accumulator alone has to be saturated with moisture after all those years. Plus a visual inspection of the O-tube will let you know how much wear and tear the compressor has endured. Both parts are not difficult to replace.

I'll consider that. Are any special tools required to get the O-Tube out? Also, there are some rather unconventional looking clips attaching one of the lines to the receiver/dryer. Does that require special tools?

Well, I finally got around to changing the service port out this weekend. First hurdle was trying to figure out how much refrigerant the system held I had looked for a sticker underhood, and found none. I looked in the NAPA guide, and it showed 36oz. That didn't sound right. Dug around online and found info showing 28oz. That doesn't sound unreasonable. While connecting the low side service hose I finally found the sticker! It was on the evaporator case...turns out, it holds just 22oz. Second hurdle was trying to get the service port unscrewed from the line....I didn't have a wrench nor a socket that would fit it....they must've used some funky size to make sure people didn't unscrew it accidentally. Finally just put a pair of pliers on it and unscrewed it. Put the new one on with a crescent wrench. Vacuumed it, charged it, and it is blowing cold once again. Amazing how good the A/C is on this truck, espescially considering this is Ford's first try at an R-134a system on this truck.

I have the Ford style with the little rubber button inside. The whole service port must be changed. Can you please point me to replacements on this website so that I can order both of them. I've ordered them from here before (back in 2005 I think), but cannot find them now. Thanks!
