Celebrity evapororator

Hello, I'm trying to resurect the AC on an 86 Chevy Celebrity SW. Don't laugh, it was my dads car and is in really exellent condition , always garaged. The AC quit a couple years ago at 65,000mi. At first it had a slow leak which I suspected was the compressor since it is wet. The seal had been replaced some years ago. Compressor still turns free. At one point I noticed an oily substance on the passenger floor mat. This has made me wonder about the evapororator core. The condenser and all the hoses look dry. I guess my question is would it be common for the evaporator to go bad on this vintage of GM? Also, is there any way to know for sure if it is bad? I found the replacement on this site and the price is great but I'm sure it's a chore to swap out. Any thoughts or advise greatly appreaciated.

Jim

I guess I should have added that I own an autobody shop so I know a little about AC systems and will be doing the work myself. Gave the car to my GF and she's getting hot in the wrong way.

Has it leaked down to zero pressure? You will need to obtain at least a gauge manifold in order to get started.

Yes it's empty and I do have a gauge manifold.
Thanks, Jim
