Oil Capacity 86 Celica

Big3 on Sat June 14, 2008 5:42 PM User is offline

Year: 1986
Make: Toyota
Model: Celica
Engine Size: 2L
Refrigerant Type: R-12

What is the total system mineral oil capacity for a 1986 Toyota Celica? The NAPA chart only shows 1985 and then 1987 and up (skips 1986). The FSM says 100cc (4 oz) in the compressor, but the NAPA chart shows 8.75 oz of oil for 1985, 1986-89.

i'd trust a FSM

Alldatadiy shows refrigerant oil capacity for each component (compressor, receiver, condenser, evap) that adds up to 220 cc (7.5 oz). On a system that has been flushed and new (empty) compressor, hoses, condenser, receiver, evaporator installed use this total?

Does it have a tag on the refrigerant amount for that year? You can judge the oil by that..Let us know the R12 capacity and we'll figure the oil out for you..I don't have the books at home...

(Get the refrigerant capacity out of the service manual)

I'd go with Big3 on this. These foreign manuals say the capacity is X. But they are listing it as just one component of the system. Mitchell list the oil capacity at 2.0 to 3.4 ounces. This vehicle uses a Nip 10P15c. Most oil charts for a Nip 10p is 6 to 7 ounces.

FSM = 750g - 850g (1.7 lb - 1.9 lb) R-12

So far, I have settled on 7.5 oz oil. I'd like to post a picture of my 22 year old evaporator but I don't know how (and I don't have a host to link to it). Quite an interesting site even though it wasn't leaking. I didn't know I had my very own petri dish inside my car (it looks like I may have found Jimmy Hoffa).

Can you figure out the total oil capacity based on refrigerant capacity for this vehicle? R12 capacity is 1.7 lb - 1.9 lb. I am guessing 7.5-8.0 ounces mineral oil.

I would appreciate any input as to oil capacity based on refrigerant capacity here - also, does R12 take less oil than the same system using 134a?

Not in my opinion. I actually prefer an extra ounce of oil when converting an R12 system.
