My ac started making intermitant whislting noises from time to time on a recent road trip. The noises usually last only one second and come 3 to 4 at a time or more. Sometimes they are louder than at other times. It makes the same noise when the ac is turned off or the engine is shut off with the ac still on. Can anyone help? I can give some history on the system if necessary.

If noise is from compressor- then I suspect broken or unseated reed valves- if noise is from orifice tube- then it's no big deal- I have experienced the R-4 compressor emitting this noise- (which is like pinching off a balloon as you let the air out) maybe 3 times in my life-- each time the pressure was equalizing through the compressor because of high to low leak because of broken reed valves....

The number one A/C diagnostic tool there is- is to know how much refrigerant is in the system- this can only be done by recovering and weighing the refrigerant!!
Just a thought.... 65% of A/C failures in my 3200 car diagnostic database (GM vehicles) are due to loss of refrigerant due to a leak......
