Sanden help for VW Golf

Hello there from the UK!

I have a VW Golf TDI (150pd) fitted with a Sanden SD7V16, 1J0 820 803 K, model 1233 compressor

I'm new to air con, but I believe SD7V16 means 7=cylinders, V= vertical mount 1=1" fittings 6= 6 groves in pulley.

I wrongly assumed that all SD7V16's would be the same, and bought a secondhand unit from a Skoda (European brand, owned by VW, very similar cars). Although it will physically fit, the hose connections are different. I though I could chop the plug and solder the VW one on, then swap the end housings, but the bolt pattern on the Skoda housings are completely different.

I am trying to source a secondhand unit from eBay. There are many SD7V16's, none the with same numbers as mine. I have a couple of questions:

Which is the important number, 1J0 820 803 K or model 1233
Which other pumps will be compatible with my Golf? I am happy to change to wiring plugs over

Many thanks,
Chris

The "V" is for Variable displacement. The 7 and 16 are the general model series and capacity of the unit. I think that the model number 1233 is what specifies the exact version of 7V16 you have in terms of mounting, ports, and pulley. Pulleys can usually be swapped around if everything else is the same.

The long number is the manufacturers part number.. The model number, are you sure it's not 1223..?

SD7V16 breaks down in to 7 Cylinders..... V Variable displacement.... 16, 160cc maximum displacement..

Tim may be able to shed some light on how the model number is decoded, there are several listed for the Mk4 Golf PD.. but I believe that a 1245 should fit too... These compressors are a pain in the butt as some rotate clockwise, some anticlockwise and some will rotate either way so mixing and matching can be tricky... You do know that you can buy one brand new for around £200 +VAT, hardly worth trawling through the scrap yard for

That depends on your point of view! The Skoda pump I got for free, so I can sling that on eBay to fund the correct one. Anyway, I like scrap yards and £200 is a chuck of cash to me that I rather not spend if possible.

It is indeed 1223, if anyone knows of any others that will fit (1245, thanks Karl) that'd be great.

Thanks for all your help guys

Hi there,

It would seem from the Hella Climate and the ETKA catalogues that the 1J0 820 803 K, model 1233, is different to the pumps used on other Mk4 Golf TDI's of that era. Mine is the 150pd (engine code ARL).

I am now looking at replacement clutch assemblies, 1J0820811B & 1J0820811H are available. Could anyone please tell me which may fit?

Many thanks,
Chris

Chances are either may fit, it depends on the chassis number of your vehicle.. You'll have to take the old one to the scrap yard with you to match it up.... Loads of VAG vehicles use your model of compressor and clutch...
