64 Coupe de Ville

MickMc on Tue August 05, 2008 3:09 AM User is offline

Year: 1964
Make: Cadillac
Model: coupe
Engine Size: 429
Refrigerant Type: r12
Country of Origin: United States

New here.

I've been referred here several times, so this time its time to ask my favorite question.

I have a 64 Cadillac, sealed AC, I am willing to change the evaparator, but what else do I need to change before I can start using 134.
I know I need to drain the system, but the Cadillac does not have a POA, so what else do I need to do for the conversion.

If your evaporator is leakimng, change it and recharge with R12.. It's still around and prices have actually come down. The seals in your compressor (A5?) may not be suitable for R134a, keeping it R12 is the only way I would do it..Hope this helps..

Some of those older 60's GM's had a weird cable operated gizmo that I think acted much like a POA. I agree with fixing any leaks and putting R12 back into it.

I do not think he has a leak. I think he is saying he will change the condenser because he thinks he has to in order to convert to 134a

First, why are you changing the evaporator core? Second, what kind of metering device is used for that vehicle is it the vir (valves in the receiver?) (thermo expansion valve) Third, don't try to fix what does not need to be fixed. Fourth, what equipment do you have available to do your retro fit. with this information we will can better be prepared to help. good luck

Bohica has a pic of the valve used on the A5 compressor, don't have time to search for it, hopefully he'll pop in and give his excellent advice on these compressors..

A '64 is an A6 with STV system. The last year for an A5 with hot gas bypass was '61.

The system is sealed, but not working today, maybe because of low pressure.

R12 to recharge the system is the problem, unless some has a cost effective solution besides me buying a huge bottle and only needing a little bit.

I was told I needed to change the condenser for 134, something about high side pressure or something.

I installing an AC system in my 67 Chevy truck, late model condensor and I already drained the A6, so I was thinking about doing both with 134.

The Cadillac is closer to being ready to charge so that is what started this question...What Do I need to do to convert my Cadillac to 134?

Keep the system R-12.

But if you do decide to convert, you'll need to flush the oil and replace with 10.5 oz POE or BVA 100, replace the receiver dryer with and XH7 or XH9 desiccant, replace the shaft seal on the A6 with double lip (if they fit on the old A6, it should), and adjust the STV pressure down to around 24.5 to 25.5 psi (loosen locknut and adjust). Add conversion fittings, HPCO, and retrofit label. These are all must do items.

You might also need to replace the condenser with a higher capacity unit.

Given the age of the vehicle, you're probably going to need to replace ALL the hoses, as well as the fan clutch, if equipped.

But keep the system R-12... don't ruin that beauty.

Ok if I don't convert the Cadillac to 134, where do I buy R12 at a reasonable price, or a reasonable substitute...

You have to have your EPA card to buy R12. You can get the EPA card by taking a test on line for a small cost. Then you can find some on a well known auction site if you don't want a 30 lb drum of R12. The price of R12 has come down some over the years.
