Noisy with A/C turned on '98 Chevy Malibu 3.l v6

Year: 1998
Make: Chev
Model: Malibu LS
Engine Size: 3.1
Refrigerant Type: R 134
Country of Origin: United States

Car has has what sounds like bearing noise when the A/C clutch is engaged. 70,000 miles on car.

I reduced the noise by about 1/2 by replacing the upper idler pulley for the serpentine belt. I reduced almost all the rest of the nose by spraying the belt with belt dressing and spraying the A/C clutch face with WD-40.

I have listened to the moving pulleys with the old "stick in the ear" procedure and do not find any particular area that seems out of normal to me.

My question is two fold:

1. Would the A/C clutch bearing be moving (noisy) when the A/C is engaged or disengaged?

2. I understand that if it is a clutch bearing, it can be replaced without taking the compressor off and therefore not having to recharge the A/C. This compressor hangs down under the engine and looks very difficult to get to. Can it be done on this car?

Thanks, JackC

The bearing turns whenever the engine is running regardless of engagement. It is difficult to remove the clutch without removing the compressor but not impossible.

When the compressor engages, that puts more strain on the belt which can change the noise that other parts make. Before absolutely concluding it's the compressor, take the belt off and spin all the accessories by hand to see if any are noisy.

Thanks to both of you. Exactly what I wanted to know.
