I've run into a problem.

70monte on Wed September 10, 2008 2:18 PM User is offline

Year: 1992
Make: Chevrolet
Model: Cavalier
Engine Size: 2.2L
Refrigerant Type: R12
Country of Origin: United States

In preparation for the new parts that I have coming from ACkits today, I was checking into getting the R12 reclaimed so I can replace the compressor and other AC parts. I cannot find anyone around here locally who has the equipment to reclaim R12. I've tried AC repair shops, the dealership, an autobody shop, and the junkyard. One shop actually told me just to open a line and vent it myself and that no one would know. I finally found a shop about 35 miles away that will do it but wants to charge me $80 just to hook it up to his machine. Is this an average price for this procedure.? Is it that hard to find places that reclaim R12? I called a total of 7 places with only one having the equipment to do it. So, is the $80 out of line to get this done? Thanks.

$80.00 is on the high side unless they allow you to come back and have it reinstalled? Most will reclaim for free if your refrigerant is good and they get to keep it.

TRB,
Thanks for the reply. I told the guy that I just wanted the R12 reclaimed so that I could replace my compressor. I told him that I was doing the repair myself and recharging myself. That is when he told me it was $80 just to hook it up to the machine. The R12 in my car should still be good since the air still works good and I'm only repairing the system because my compressor is leaking oil out of the body seal. He would get to keep the R12. I guess I will keep hunting and see if I can find someone else to do it cheaper. One shop told me that when their R12 machine broke down, they didn't get it fixed because no one used R12 anymore. This whole thing has caused me to second guess my decision to keep the car R12 instead of retrofitting to R134a. Thanks again.

I would check a few more shops. Tell them up front they can have the refrigerant.

Where do you live?

It might be a good idea to post where you live. If someone nearby is interested they might chime in.

If you wanted to do some research you might start with companies like ACKITs that supply recycling machines and see if they might tell you if they have sold any to someone near you.

I live in Aurora, MO. Its a small town. Springfield, MO is about 35 miles away and is where I found the place that wanted to charge me $80. I did find another place that will charge me $45 so thats where I will probably go. I will probably have to wait until week after next as I'm going out of town next week and this shop requires an appoinment.

Last year when I had the R134a reclaimed from my 98 chevy truck, this one shop I went to only charged me $10 but they don't have the equipment to do R12.

Thanks for the ideas. I didn't realize that having R12 reclaimed was going to be such a hassle. It makes me guess that all of the places that I initially called that work on vehicles must just vent it out when they have to deal with it.
