What should I replace?

70monte on Wed March 25, 2009 5:41 PM User is offline

Year: 1998
Make: Chevrolet
Model: K3500
Engine Size: 7.4L
Refrigerant Type: R134a
Country of Origin: United States

I bought this truck about a year and a half ago. The AC was working fine. The compressor and accumulator are not original and there is dye in the system so I know the AC has been serviced in the past. Recently the high side pressure port developed a leak and it actually blew a piece of rubber out of it when I took off the cap. Obviously the hose assembly will have to be replaced. The compressor looks to be a cheap one because it has a four seasons and murry part # on it and its painted black. I'm assuming its a reman. Its was occasionally making a slight rattling noise when I first got the truck whenever I used the AC. I'm thinking about also replacing the compressor with a Seltec clone.

Do you think I need to replace the accumulator and do anything with the condensor and evaporator? I plan on checking and replacing the orifice tube. Thanks.

Change the Accumulator if you want, they are cheap enough, check and change the O tube, and it's your decision on flushing the system. Otherwise change the high side service port (it's replaceable) and then vac/recharge to system specs. You don't know how much oil is in the system, but if you just change the accumulator add back 2 to 3 ounces.. Hope this helps..

Also, the seltec clone is a pretty good compressor, I'm going on my third year with mine.. Trouble free...

Here's the link for the GM High side service port it's under miscellaneous items on Tim's site... good luck

Wayne-

I would recommend changing out the compressor/drier/orifice tube and condenser, properly flushing out your evaporator and hose making sure there is no debris or oil left, click HERE to read up on flushing. I know it might be more than you want to do, but that would be the proper way of doing it and im sure you dont want to have any more issues a few months down the road, so i would suggest to do it right the first time. You will be saving more than $200 by buying the Seltec compressor which i would highly recommend, which you can turn and spend on a new condenser. The reason i say to buy a new condenser if for the fact that the oem condensers are not flushable and if there is any debris whatsoever on the orifice tube when you pull it, its best to replace it. Guys, thanks for the replies. I guess I will probably replace the condensor as well and flush out the evap. I did this complete repair two years ago on my 98 K1500 using the Seltec compressor, as well as new lines, condensor, and accumulator from this site. I'm kind of short on money so I was hoping to be able to fix this truck a little cheaper but like you said, I don't want problems down the road. I don't know the condition of the system so I might have to replace everything anyway.

I wish I could afford the hecat flush system because the traditional flush gun does not work that great. Thanks again.
