Fitting compatibility

I'm putting together a custom system. I have the factory in-dash unit, but a Sanden 7176 compressor in a non-stock location. I want to run my lines out of sight (under the fender, etc.) to the extent possible. I've been studying and shopping for fittings to complete this system and have come across some terminology I don't understand.

There are O-ring fittings, and "male insert" O-ring fittings. I don't understand the difference between the two or to what extent they can be interconnected. Is there some kind of reference that explains how these different fittings work?

Here is a couple of fittings that will best describe what they are. This fitting is a BeadLock Female-O-Ring 90 Deg. #6, as you can see this fitting has a place for the o-ring and the nut will fit over another fitting.

Next is a Beadlock Bulkhead #6 that fill mate to the first fitting as you can see, this is a male o-ring.

Hope this helps and good luck!
