How do these readings look?

scoob8000 on Sat April 25, 2009 6:23 PM User is offlineView users profile

Year: 1994
Make: Honda
Model: Civic
Engine Size: 1.5
Refrigerant Type: 134a
Ambient Temp: 85
Pressure Low: 25
Pressure High: 275
Country of Origin: United States

My book has a weird chart that I'm too dumb to figure out. There are no guideline readings to go off of like my GM books.

85f 30% humidity. Engine at 1500rpm, Ac on Max, condensor fan running, Low: 25 High: 275

I pulled a deep vacuum for 30ish minutes, charged using 2 12oz cans of 134a. System calls for 21-23oz.

Those readings seem low compared to other cars I have worked on. Air is cool, but not as cold as I would expect.

Expansion valve system, readings look good if it is cooling?

Could be over charged a little as I list 17 to 21 ounces of R134a. Mitchell's chart shows the pressures being pretty close to what you have listed.

I show 19 ounces and the pressures seem just a bit high to me, are you sure no air got into the system??

TRB, yup it's got a expansion valve...

I figured out why it wasn't as cool as I had expected. There's a valve in one of the heater hoses leading to the core. Even with the selector set to cool, it was pushing the valve closed but not all the way. With the valve pushed shut, it's nice and cool. It's close to 90 already today and it seems to be cooling nicely.

The valve core on my high side fitting is leaking I see though. I picked up a tool and a couple cores, but I hate to discharge to fix it. I found some valve core kits that let you change them without discharging but they're too expensive for my taste. The plastic cap seems to be keeping it from leaking for now. I don't hear a hiss and I don't have any dye around the fitting.

Chick, I pulled vacuum for for a good 30 minutes and watched to make sure it held for another 15. I got a tip from someone on here too, to crack the lines on the quick connects once I open the can to purge air out of the manifold/hoses..

The heater valve is a very common problem on Civics. You can adjust it by un-clipping the outer housing of the cable at the valve, and move it up so the valve moves completely closed with the dash lever at full cold.

The plastic cap should prevent leaking at the port. The shrader valve often leaks a little, thus the plastic cap with gasket in it.

Terrific! I'll go take a closer look at that heater control valve once this rain lets up!

I figure I'll leave the valve alone. If it leaks enough that it quits working, I'll fix it and recharge.
