HIGH SIDE SERVICE VALVE

NKENN on Sat September 19, 2009 12:15 PM User is offlineView users profile

Year: 1996
Make: FORD
Model: TAURUS
Engine Size: 3L
Refrigerant Type: R134A
Ambient Temp: 82
Pressure Low: 30
Pressure High: 185
Country of Origin: United States

The high side service valve has a severe leak. When the cap is removed I can hear the refrigerant leaking out of the valve and when I put my finger over the valve it pushes hard against my finger. When I replace the cap, I can still detect a leak coming from under the cap by putting soapy water on around the cap. The service valve does not seem to have a normal schrader valve stem in it. When I look into the service port all I see is a solid metal "shield" for lack of the proper terminology. There does not appear to be any way to replace the valve stem. What am I missing? Does anyone know how to repair this type of high side service valve?

TKANKS!

You replace the whole port unit. It unscrews from the stub welded to the line. Make sure you get a new cap too. Cap should hold it even if the valve leaks.

MK378, thanks for the reply. Do you know where I can purchase the entire port unit? I checked the Motorcraft web site and it is not listed. As a matter of fact, they show a schrader valve stem as a replacement part for the port. Apparently they don't know what kind of port they put on the car. Thanks for any information you can provide.

This part appears to be some type of adapter. It does not even remotely resemble the original equipment service port on my car. Is my only recourse to replace the liquid line that contains the service port?

I would double check the the service port is not a removable item like the one I posted.
