Manifold gauges confusion

pippo on Wed October 28, 2009 3:12 PM User is offline

Hi Guys,

I have cars with both r12 and r143a. I was hoping to buy a manifold gauge, maybe the r134a and screw on adapters on the ends so it will fit r12 set up fittings/cylinder. Well, I heard its not that simple cuz the gauges are affected differently depending if r134a or r12.

1) I dont get it, PSI is PSI, isnt it??

2) An old timer here said I need 1/2"X1/4" ACME adapters which will fit an r134a manifold and adapt for an r12 setup. Would this work?

3) I also heard there may be a type of Table/chart which details ambient temperature, humidity, etc to help one figure out the ideal low side PSI when adding refrigerant. Is this table available anywhere, if such a thing?

4) Must I buy 2 manifolds, for each refrigerent?
Thanks, People!

1. Yes.

2. The 1/2" ACME thread was specified for R134a, to replace the 1/4" flare used with R12. Most R134a connections use a quick coupler and the connectors you will need are included in the gauge set TRB recommended. I purchased one of these sets and have been very satisfied.

3. Check the Tips & Procedures page for a "R134a Pressure/Temperature Relationship Chart"

4. No. But make sure you purge properly so as not to cross contaminate.

Mastercool is a line of products we offer but is not an ACkits.com company.

Thanks Cat, I will look for that chart and study . Thanks for the recommendation for that manifold that TRB suggested.
