1998 Explorer gets cold...slowly

djboo4you on Tue May 25, 2010 11:40 AM User is offline

Year: 1998
Make: Ford
Model: Explorer
Engine Size: 5.0
Refrigerant Type: R134a
Ambient Temp: 85
Pressure Low: 45
Pressure High: 290
Country of Origin: United States

My static pressure is 105 on both the low and high sides. I can get vent temps of about 43 but it just takes a little time (10-15 mins). I power washed my radiator and condenser to make sure I have enough air flow. When I first start the car up, after 3-4 mins, I get vent temps down to about 54...then like I said it takes another 10 or so mins to really start dropping from there. Is this normal or do you guy suspect something is wrong? Thanks in advance

First thing I would check is that the fins did not get bent over during the power wash.

What are the pressures at a fast idle? Do you know the current refrigerant level in the system?

Have you added refrigerant before? checked for leaks? checked the clutch fan, and electric fan for proper operation??

sorry just got home from work...I haven't got a chance to check pressure at high (1500) idle. I will try tomorrow. Also yes, I did have the system open. I had the typical foam wrapped accumulator leak, and a suction line that was darn near about to go. I replaced them both , all the o-rings with NYLOG, and added the same amount or oil i had in the accumulator plus 2oz., vacuumed the system for about an hour, it held, and put in 3 12oz cans of 134a, no electric fan but I haven't checked the fan clutch yet either. Any tips on how to do that or what to look for.

How well does it cool at highway speeds?

So I just got back from a 30 mile trip on the highway...it cools great...between 40 and 42...it's 90 out today so I was loving it. The other thing is once I got off the highway, it still stayed around 43-44 so I suppose I don't have a prob afterall...I havent had air in a few years so mabey I was just setting my expectations too high. It cooled down to 50 @ the vents in about 5 mins and 42 in another 5 mins...thanks for all the help guys
