I'm draining and refilling my system because I'm 99.9% certain this was not done when it was retrofitted with R134a. I'm completely confused about the type of oil to use. I can't seem to find any oil locally without some sort of additive. The most common one is "ICE". The 8-oz bottle says it's 7 oz of oil, and 1 oz of ICE performance enhancer. Like most of you, I don't believe in any "magic in a bottle" and I'd rather just use oil and refrigerant.
I'm assuming a PAG oil is recommended, but I'd like to use something that's available locally because I'm kinda in a hurry. I've already ordered a dryer from ackits.com and it's on the way...if I order oil now, I have to wait longer. I got my R134a (plain, thank you) locally.
What weight of oil should I use? I've seen 64, 100, and 150. Everybody says "use what the manufacturer specified". Even if the original refrigerant was R12?
Any idea where I can buy the oil locally? I'm in the Memphis TN area.
Thanks.
Jack
One more bit of information: I've scoured the vehicle's shop manual, and there is a section for the factory A/C. It does not mention what type of oil is required. I can probably get a model number off the compressor if that will help.
Thanks.
Jack
If you are converting I would use a quality POE like the BVA AutoGlo. Ice is not going the harm you compressor but in my opinion it's not going to be a magic bullet either.

I was in a hurry and I was able to find a supplier here with a DEC PAG oil. They were able to look up my truck in their system and told me that it called for 64 for my truck, so that's what I bought.
Thanks for the help!

Pag 46 if thats the route you're going, but the BVA Auto 100 is better for retrofits in my opinion...
