Freezing lines but works good????

rt707 on Sat July 10, 2010 10:09 AM User is offline

Year: 79
Make: Ford
Model: Ranchero
Engine Size: 351m
Refrigerant Type: R-12
Ambient Temp: 90
Pressure Low: 26-27
Pressure High: 205-215
Country of Origin: United States

Converted my system back to R-12. I didnt get my STV/POA adjusted right so now im getting light freezing after the TXV and on the downstream side of the STV/POA. outlet pipe of evap into STV/POA sweats wich is weird I thought.

My question is this, My vent temps are between 40-44 degrees so is it going to hurt anything to run it this way? I dont think the actual evap core is freezing, im getting water out of the drain and my air flow out the vents never diminishes like its turning into a block of ice. I even took it out late last night when the outside temp dropped to 70 and it still stayed at 40-42 out the vents.

It just kinda scares me to see that frost on the compressor fitting and wanted to know if its ok to keep running till I can find someone with a R-12 reclaimer. Thanks for the help!

wow, been so many years since I worked on one of them, so I'm guessing here... Sweating coming out of the evap is normal.. the system is working.. pressures for that ambient are good, does the system have a sight glass, in the line maybe..as I said I can't remember that far back.. On a humid day a little frost after the Poa/STV should be fine, and since its sweating at the outlet pipe sounds good to me..did you pull a good vacuum and charge the correct amount back into the vacuum?? Check for a sight glass, I believe they have one in the line......

Thanks for the reply Chick. Well I found out that my evaporator does finally freeze after about 1 and a 1/2 hours of driving. My system is now hybrid but it does have a sight glass and it cleared on 5 12 ounce cans. Now I need to pull the R12 back out and re-adjust my STV/POA so it will stop freezing.

I was just mainly wondering if it will hurt the compressor to run it in this condition until I can get the valve re-adjusted. Thanks

Can't you just shut off the AC/compressor manually on the dashboard like every 10 minutes for 2 minutes? It will warm up and defrost any ice on the evaporator.

You are close on that adjustment. If you were running around here with 8% humidity @110f - it would be great.

It will not damage the OE system, but you said something about a "hybrid"?

The Ranchero always cooled well. Good to see a '79 still on the road & full of R12.

By Hybrid I mean I have a Seven piston rotary compressor in place of the factory York, Universal Paralell flow condensor, Built all my hose's myself and new R134a expansion valve.

Im thinking I should change the expansion valve too since the one I have now is for R134a. Does anyone know where to get one for R12?

Today, most expansion valves will say for both R12 and R134a.. It wouldn't pay a company to make both anymore.. And they usually do work with both, but you can e-mail the guys at ackit.com and they may be able to come up with a valve you'd be happy with.. that is their business..
