condensor fan speed

joejg24 on Sat July 10, 2010 2:48 PM User is offline

Year: 1999
Make: honda
Model: civic
Engine Size: 1.6
Refrigerant Type: 134a
Ambient Temp: 100
Pressure Low: 55
Pressure High: 275
Country of Origin: United States

My 1999 Honda Civic ac blows cold at night but not cold in heat of the day, the pressures are 50-55 on the low side and about 275 on the high side on a 100 degree day, no freon has been added to the system. The condensor fan does come on but looks rather slow compaired to the radiator fan, is this normal?

If the car hasn't been touched in 11 years, it might be time to have the system evacuated and recharged to factory specs.. No way to know if any leaked out unless you weigh the charge, but it's not abnormal for a system to lose some over this period of time, as far as the fan speeds, it might not have more than one speed since there are two fans..but at 100 degrees, your high side isn't that high...

Hey Chick, thanks for the fast reply. Dont think it has lost any freon because of the pressures, isnt the low side a little to high and the high side a little to high, thought it should have been about 225-250 max. This car does have 2 fans 1 for the radiator only and the other for the condensor only, the 1 for the condensor runs about 1/2 the speed, would that cause the pressures on both sides to go up? I was getting vent temps of about 74 degrees.

that is typical for a slight loss of refrigerant, I would still evacuate and recharge the correct amount back in, that may lower the low side and raise the high side slightly... Also a low side off 55psi isn't bad in 100degree heat, if the fan is on high speed, lower the fan setting, max air, and you should see it drop...But I'd still recharge it to be sure...
