My Buddy Mechanic says for EASY CHEAP COMPRESSOR REPLACEMENT

bobsofi on Sat July 17, 2010 3:06 PM User is offline

Year: 99
Make: mazda
Model: 626

ok, my buddy garage mechanic says to get a rebuilt compressor, remove the high and low lines and clean them out with water and dry them good. Get new O rings. Install it all back in. Install the refrigerant/oil mix and DRIVE ON!

What do you pros think about doing it this cheap easy way

Wow. Why did I not think of that. Water, the universal solvent!

I think your buddy is going to make the rest of us a LOT of money.

I am very new at this, and water no workie. I replaced my compressor yesterday and I did not flush the system. I checked the old compressor for trash in the oil, and there was no trash in it. So I replaced the dryer, added the same amount of oil that came out of the old compressor, pulled a 30 minute vacuum, and then charged the system.

What I did worked for my case, it may not for yours.

Just do some reading on this forum and you will learn alot. Lots of smart people on this forum that are willing to help. Read all the Flushing Forum and you will have a pretty good idea on what it is gonna take to do the job.

I know I've been out putting away a stocking order in the warehouse and some water sure taste good. But I don't even know how to respond to the water as a flushing agent comment.

Tim:

I figured it had to be a joke. Flushing the entire system from the compressor connections with a garden hose?

Of course after the oxygen blow out thread, maybe not.

BobSofi:

If this clown was seriously telling you that, he plans to sell you a total system replacement (TSR) about a day after you do put water in your system.

To the uninformed reading this thread:

DO NOT FLUSH YOUR SYSTEM WITH WATER IN THE REFRIGERANT LOOP. Water is ok for cleaning the OUTSIDE of condensors in sealed, pressurized systems.

Perfect - unless you actually want the AC to work now or in the future. There are no shortcuts to AC work, your "garage buddy mechanic" needs significant AC training.

Repeat after me: There are no shortcuts to AC work. There are no shortcuts to AC work. There are no shortcuts to AC work.

Your buddy has misinformed you. The other members are telling you the honest story - hear them!

Water doesn't work and is harmful for a number of reasons. Here are three:

1) Oil and water don't mix. The A/C system is charged with oil and various hydrocarbons lubricant additives and of course refrigerant. Water will do nothing to carry away any old oil or oily debris and will bind with any PAG or POE refrigeration oil residue.

2) We evacuate the system at length to remove even the most minute trace of water because water freezes and jams valves among other mischief it perpetrates. Flushing the system with water has about the same wisdom value as rubbing snow on frostbitten hands or feet.

3) Tap water leaves mineral residue behind when it evaporates during evacuation. The minerals (as in dissolved stone) will trash the compressor.

I would seriously doubt any future advice this person offers.

OK, he said to remove the high and low hoses and wash out with water and let it dry out good, REAL GOOD. Then replace with new O rings, and get'r going. He suggested that any solvent to clean the gunk out of the high and low hoses was BAD THANG. So anyway. What do you pros do in a sitch like mine. BURNT MAIN BEARING????

This thread has got to be a joke. As anyone with a lick of A/C experience would never suggest what you are claiming.
