Motorhome A/C oil capacity

Year: 1993
Make: Winnebago
Model: Adventurer
Engine Size: 454
Refrigerant Type: R12

I'm going to be replacing the compressor and receiver/drier on a '93 Winnebago Adventurer this week. GM chassis WCG34RQ. Compressor is a Sanden SD-709, Model U7499. Supposedly, the compressor and low side components are all GM supplied while the high side components are all Winnebago/Frigette components.

Two issues I'm having are that nobody seems to be able or willing to tell me what receiver/drier should be used, and I can't find an oil capacity anywhere. The receiver/drier I should be able to match up by removing and bringing to a shop for visual matching, but how do I determine how much oil I should put in the system? I can't find an A/C tag anywhere on the vehicle, though I've managed to determine that the system capacity is 32 oz for R12.

Large evap and condenser. I would use about 8.5 ounces as the total oil capacity.

Your putting total in bold makes me wonder if that's not the amount I should add when replacing the compressor and receiver/drier. That's really what my question boils down to, how much should I put in?

The obvious answer is to flush the system and know the totalamount of oil in the system.

Anything else is just a guess. Since this is a 17 year old system made up of mixed components, there is no table of factory guesses for component replacement. Obviously Tim is unwilling to guess either.

Really you should flush a system that old anyway.

I don't have the ability to flush the system I'm afraid, and since it's a motorhome and I'm operating on a fairly short timetable I can't just bring it somewhere for a flush. Surely there's an oil amount to add for replacing the receiver/drier and an amount to add when replacing the compressor? The system has been sealed and healthy until the recent compressor clutch failure, never even needed a recharge in those 17 years. If I have to I'll drain the receiver/drier and compressor, measure, and take my best guess for proper replacement amount, but I was hoping for a more exact way of doing it.

Some will say measure the oil from the old compressor and add that plus an ounce. 1.5 ounces for a drier R & R. This is only a guess and if the compressor fails it would be 50/50 on defective compressors or improper oil amount.
