Compressor or clutch noise

The car has the original ac compressor on it which compresses OK however it is noisy when engaged. Is there a way to determine if it is the compressor or the clutch making the noise?

Typically noise when engaged is compressor noise, and noise when not engaged is AC clutch bearing noise.

York compressor is known to be noisy. Check the mounting bolts as they tend to vibrate loose. Bearings can be replaced on this clutch if needed. Normally if its free of noise while the a/c is off the bearing is fine.
