I just wanted to share this, my buddy was telling me that his r134a-retrofitted '92 Civic stopped blowing cold air. Well, I spoke with him yesterday, and he said he found the problem: there was a big hole in the compressor case, perhaps two inches across at its largest dimension. I'm assuming it was a Sanden, it was off of a '94-'95 EG Civic ('92 and '93 EG Civics are r12 equipped from the factory). He's off to Autozone to buy a new compressor now, let's all wish him luck!

Most people don't even consider injustice until it happens to them.
These compressor were never design to run R134a. Many have blown holes in the case after doing conversions.

After a blown compressor like that, replace the condenser. The compressor starts coming apart inside and bits of metal go into the condenser. After a while of that, the scroll breaks entirely and knocks a hole in the case. I think the 92 is fitted with the same parallel flow condenser as the 94 and 95 factory R-134a. So it should work OK with R-134a. On conversion it's important to get all the mineral oil out and use the exact right amount of PAG46.
I think it was more to do with the internal pressure of the compressor causing it to blow. Maybe iceman can provide more detail. I could be wrong but have not seem many of these compressors do well converted.
