What is the proper way to change oil in a compressor

bob234 on Sun April 24, 2011 3:11 PM User is offline

I have a Sanden 508 that I want to use on my truck with R12. I think they put PAG oil in them from the factory. Do I just simply let the oil oil drain and put mineral oil in through the drain plug on top, and do I need to drain and refill with mineral multiple times to make sure I got it all? I know R12 and PAG will destroy the system.

Best to drain and fill a couple times. I would also flush the rest of the system and replace the drier.

Drain, refill sump with mineral oil. Inject 20 to 50 cc's of mineral oil into the suction port. Spin the shaft several revolutions. Drain and refill. Repeat.

Compressor flushing procedure

Usually twice is enough, especially on a new compressor.

This is what I did, drained after filling and turning by hand and a few times. About 2005 the rebuilt compressor for my '88 Mazda B2200 (from board sponsor, by the way), came filled with PAG oil, and I needed to use R-12 type oil. I checked the oil type at my work's lab ising infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR).

A few months later, a co-worker bought a rebuilt compressor from AMA that already contained R12 type oil (we checked that).
