Year: 2003
Make: chevy
Model: blzer
Engine Size: 4.3
Refrigerant Type: r13
Ambient Temp: 75
Pressure Low: 63
Pressure High: not sure
Country of Origin: United States

I am in Ohio been over a 100 degrees for a while sorry unusual out here. Anyway ac blowing warm air bought gauge with freon. The gauge read around 55 PSI I read it wrong and added more freon dohhhh it went up to about 65 PSI. Before freon was added and after the clutch kicks on and off fairly quickly still blowing hot air. Also I noticed when the clutch/compressor kicks on some sparks were shooting out. I dont have a high side gauges etc what should I check next? Ac switch? Compressor/Clutch bad? How can you tell which one is bad? If I buy or borrow gauges what does the high side tell you? Will that narrow the problem down exactly? Thanks CJ

Any suggestions?

If sparks were flying out of the compressor, the recharge kit probably did its job.

Would you allow a doctor to perscribe heart medication or do open heart surgery based on only a diastolic blood pressure reading and no systolic? So why would you attempt to add refrigerant to a system without both low and high side readings?

My suggestion is NEVER use those little recharge kits if you want your A/C to work properly.

Yes I know I am an idiot for using one of those kits. I was trying to help a friend that has no money. So without the high side readings there is no way to figure it out? Can you give me some serious feed back/suggestions? Is the sparks coming from the clutch condenser because of the freon or it is/was locked up? Or does this mean it is getting ready to die? thanks CJ

Unless there's HC refrigerant, refrigerant won't ignite. Sparks flying from the clutch could be a result of excessive high side pressures, which could have numerous causes though the HPCO should kick out, compressor failure (likely due to lack of or improper lubricant with the recharge kit), or just a bad clutch. But again, without complete pressure readings all we can do is guess... just like the doctor in my example.
