Can anyone share any rebuilding tips for a Nippondenso 6P148A

M-train on Sat July 21, 2012 8:22 PM User is offline

Year: 87-93
Make: Nippondenso
Model: 6P148A
Engine Size: 5.0l
Refrigerant Type: R12
Country of Origin: United States

I want to do a rebuild instead of buying a rebuilt unit as I have a few of those compressors stored in my garage.

Is it a pretty straight forward rebuild, or is there any special tools that I will need?

I have built old York compressors way back in the 80's { I also build carbs, trannys, engines, body work, etd so I'm pretty mechanically inclined.}.

Thanks in advance.

Anyone?

Hi M-train. Was the 80's really that long ago?

I don't recall that compressor model, but parts diagrams usually will tell you what to look out for.. So...

These are carbon shaft seal compressors, so you probably need an actual installer. Can't just cheat and tap them in place like a lot of lip seals.
Don't mix up the piston bearings, keep each set numbered to it's original piston. They're very hard to measure and you might bind the swash plate if you have the wrong bearing in the wrong piston. Also, there are piston rings on all 6 (3 double sided) pistons, no undersize or oversize rings available as far as I can see.

What vehicle were these used on? Good luck.

Thanks, that was very good advise.

This is on a Mustang V8.

All numbered parts should be available, perhaps special order..

Thanks for the great diagram. I'm going to save it right now.
