Old Jeep AC

chuck172 on Fri August 10, 2012 1:38 PM User is offline

Year: 1993
Make: Jeep
Model: Wrangler
Engine Size: 4.0
Country of Origin: United States

I just bought an old Jeep Wrangler, 1993. It has AC, I don't know if it were factory supplied or added on. Everything is there, but the hose from the compresser to the condenser is broken.
I know nothing at all about Air Conditioning, but I'd like to get this working. What do I do first? Should I order the hose and install it? Should I take it somewhere and get it looked at before I start throwing money into it?

If the system has been open for any length of time. Minimum you should repair the defective hose, replace the drier, drain and replace the oil and then pull it into a vacuum and see if it holds.

I don't think any YJ's left the factory with AC. I'm pretty sure all were dealer or aftermarket installs. The TJ did have factory air with the evap built into the heater case.

I'd like to fix this ac system myself. Harbor freight sells a vacuum pump to evacuate the system. http://www.harborfreight.com/air-vacuum-pump-with-r134a-and-r12-connectors-96677.html
I can buy the compressor to condenser hose and the drier online. I need to do some research.

You are better off purchasing tools from AMA on this site. They are quality tools at a reasonable price. I'm sure you'd hate to find out you wasted your money on HF tools.
