r-4 front shaft seal

Turbo on Thu June 27, 2013 4:15 PM User is offline

Would you say the front shaft on a r-4 should be totally dry or is some oil acceptable? I pulled the clutch plate and there is some oil there but the system still has a good charge. Can someone tell me the best way to pull and replace the seal without the special tool? All instructions are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you for the advice. Don't see myself selling this car anytime soon so I would like to replace it while everything is apart. R-12 is expensive and if there is oil there must be a small leak I would assume. Going to install a double lip seal. What is the best way to remove the old and install the new seal. I already have the clutch plate off? Can I do it with tools around the garage or will I need a special tool designed just for this job. Thank you for such a great board.

Here's a thread here: Rebuild. Not a R4 but a good guideline on what you "may" need, not sure about all of the tools, if needed or if it can be done easily without them. One key tool is the seal protector
