a/c compressor noise

redsoxwin100 on Tue September 23, 2014 6:27 PM User is offline

Year: 2003
Make: honda
Model: civic

I have an engine whining noise that i've
narrowed down to the a/c compressor.
I gets louder and faster when i accelerate.
It goes away when the a/c (clutch) is engaged.

any thoughts?

thanks

chris

Noise gets LESS when the compressor is engaged? That might be the idler pulley. Take the belt off and spin the compressor and idler by hand. They should be quiet and not wobble.

actually the noise completely goes away when air is on (clutch engaged).
Midas replaced the whole compressor 4 months ago (remanufactured)---
but the car transferred owners so they won't honor the complete warrantee.
They will replace the compressor but will charge labor/ and R & R (450.00)
I'm triing to narrow the noise to the clutch/pulley which i should be able to
fix myself for less. I thought it might be a small air gap (almost non-exsistant)
but the noise was there with the clutch plate off. Again.....purrs tike a kitten when engaged.

thanks for any thoughts

Midas - your gold in their pocket. Muffler monkeys...

Pull the belt off. Check every part it touches. Alternator, idlers, pumps. Spin each one by hand, feeling for bumpy bearings. Rock each idler to see if they tip. The compressor idler bearing may be making the noise, or a $15 idler nearby may be the culprit.
