system been open for over 1 year

Year: 2002
Make: Dodge
Model: 2500 ram
Engine Size: 5.9Lgas

My compressor caught fire on my dodge last year and I removed it and bought a pulley replacement kit for my existing belt. I'm thinking of purchasing a new compressor. Since the old line has been open for over a year, [no tape/caps] is there any way I can install new compressor, vac down and it will be good to go for oil/freon? I'm not a professional AC man, but I do have a vac pump, gauges I've used on minor repairs in past. {I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night either}

Do you know why the old one caught fire ? I trust you do not want a repeat performance ?

Did it self-destruct , internally , in this process ?

Guessing , at the least you will need to replace the accumulator and flush the bugs / varmets out , that may have homesteaded in the rest of the system ? In addition to dirt and moisture .

Best of luck .

God bless
Wyr

Oils remaining in the system absorb moisture; open lines means (dust, dirt, & critters also) the system needs to be properly cleaned/flushed. The TXV (orifice) must be removed for flushing and/or replaced, and the filter/dryer must also. Then the new parts and the full amount of fresh oil can be installed; and the proper vacuum, leak check, and recharge procedures will need to be followed.
