Nick D - Blower repair

Nick , the blower's making some funny noises. It's a denso unit, with 2 screws on the bottom. I tried to get the blower wheel off, but it's sort of rusted to the shaft (even though it's plastic). When I took a look at my landcruiser one, I hit the end of the shaft with a hammer, but it just pushed the shaft out the bottom of the motor breaking the plastic. Any ideas for getting it off, then where do I go from there?

I keep a gallon of hydrochloric acid in the garage, it's cheap costing about $2.25 a gallon from my local hardware store, works great on most metals except aluminum. Get a jar small enough to fit inside of your blower wheel filled with 40% solution of that acid and water and let it soak with the motor upsidedown of course hanging from a wire for about 20 minutes. All that rust will be history and rinse it off with water and blast it with some PC Blaster. They claim Coca-Cola works but that only has a very slight amount of citric acid and may take months.

I did by some pure citric acid to play with, very expensive, and doesn't work that well, ha, the Queen of Clean on the Do It Yourself channel is always pushing lemon oil that also contains citric acid, what a joke, guess she didn't meet up with the king of clean, LOL.

I also keep a can of Permatek anti-seize in the garage, you can wire brush the rest of that shaft and coat it with that. I wrecked my condenser fan on my HVAC unit trying to get it off, took that motor apart and coated with anti-seize, I remove that once a year as that is the only way I can oil the bronze bearing in that motor, never had problems since that, and after buying a new fan blade. You have to clean off that motor shaft before attempting to separate your blower motor housings or you will wreck the bearing. Have to say that PB Blaster is good as it does help dissolve and soften that rust.

Can someone tell me how to remove the blower wheel off a late model GM vehicle? It's hot stamped on and the hub of that wheel is so thin, if you look at it too hard it will crack. I tried a heat gun, put a little pressure on the hub of that wheel and broken pieces of plastic flew everywhere and I could hear a bean counter far away laughing his ass off. I put the broken pieces in a bag and showed that to my dealer, he did sell me a new motor for 50 bucks and said that is the best he could do. I was tempted to add some good oil to the wicks, but no way, the hub curves around the motor so you can't get in there.

Won't be long when you buy a new vehicle you will find a large plastic bag with a tie in the trunk, if you have a minor problem, you just push your vehicle into that bag, tie it, and toss it in the trash can, or more likely, pay a small fortune for a recycler to take it.
