Macfreeze Refrigerant

NickD on Mon August 02, 2004 7:51 AM User is offline

Macfreeze

Lots of this stuff on Ebay and I feel their ad is very misleading regarding the EPA rules for using this stuff, but can't seem to find anything concrete listed by the EPA. They say it's an HC and have this bit in their homepage:

"Does Mac Freeze have EPA approval?

Mac Freeze is a zero ozone depleting "second generation" replacement for R-134a and all other substitutes for Freon that are non-ozone depleting. EPA's Final Rule, issued April 1, 1994, states:

"In this final rule, the Agency has determined that second generation replacements, if they are non-ozone depleting and are replacing non-ozone depleting first generation alternatives, are exempt from reporting requirements under Section 612"

If an automotive system is "first generation" (i.e.- has 134a) and contains no Freon) it may accept a "second generation" refrigerant like Mac Freeze."

That appears to be a generalization, any comments?

Ha!

Just what you need to re heat your MacBurgers and MacFries.....Whilst they are still sitting in your footwell....Mac Bang. I note that they quote the autoignition points and not what happens when you strike a spark. By the same measure, Diesel is far more flamable than petrol

Nick ol' buddy, please....my sides hurt! LMFAO!

Did you look at the guy's "ME" page? Too funny! The "MacFreeze" brand is the house brand of BBQ12a.... for a PAWN SHOP!!! That is basically the pinnacle of crooked!

I really like the auction text too - looks like it was written by an advertising lawyer. It is only for replacing 134a in a perfect system.... yeah right.

It might be fun to contact the insurance carrier for the pawn shop, and ask about the product liability insurance certificate for the cans of flammable gas..... LOL

Until today, I have never heard of Macfreeze, read the ad and their website and found it amazing how they could twist the law. I feel we should be aware of what is out there. Apparently, the EPA never heard of Macfreeze either.

Hey Tim, at least he's not asking how to use it... This is really so funny it's scary..Makes you wonder whats next?? Hey, I'm all for taking a perfectly working system and putting junk into it and then wonder why it doesn't work any more.. I'm sure macfreeze will fix all the problems it creates...After all, Macfreeze is the new wave...Lets keep this one in the off topic...Thats where HC's belong anyway....On the lighter side, you walk into autozone, or Pep Boys etc and pick up a case of macfreeze. Go to the checkout and the kid that knows nothing about cars or Ac , but runs the parts counter asks, you want macfries with that???

Was I naughty? Should I go to my room? Did see this posted, "Topics relating to HC refrigerants are not permitted on this site. All posts on this topic will be deleted by the site moderators." So elected to put this in the off topic section. It's tantamount to the death kits that say nothing about installing an R-134a compatible dryer or oil slugging a compressor, or the damage sealers can do to a system.

Nothing is stated in the macfreeze site that HC's are illegal for MVAC used period in 18 states, and it will take an attorney with the ability to comprehend double talk when reading the federal rules on this subject. Macfreeze also does not provide a safety or composition sheet and they give the impression its a homogeneous refrigerant, maybe it is.

Still feel we should know about it, as even the use the that HC word is minimized, and it does cool 1/3 better than R-12 according to their claims.

Yikes. This bunch of pawnbrokers must have a paralegal writing their stuff. Look at the disclaimer on the MSDS:

MacFreeze MSDS

Then look at the Flash Point Data..... They claim it has none! Last time I looked, providing false data on an MSDS was a serious federal crime.

Here is an accurate MSDS for a propane / butane blend:

Hancock MSDS

You will notice that the Flash point of the gas is actually -156f That's right MINUS 156 degrees F.

For MSDS reporting purposes, the flash point of any material is the point at which it begins to evolve flammable vapors.

For comparison, here is the MSDS for acetone:

Acetone MSDS

You will note that the acetone has a flash point of -4F, but an autoignition point of +869F. Does that mean acetone is as safe as water? Of course not. By merely stating the "autoignition temperature" you can make acetone sound pretty safe. But in reality, it is ready to start a flash fire, even if you store it in the freezer....

Tim: I know you don't want another HC thread, so all I am posting is information on the dishonesty of an e-bay seller. Just safety data, honest!

Ha, never make fun of Tim's spelling or his grammar, it will haunt you forever.

But I must say, his spelling and grammar did vastly improve and he is a better person today.

Bud you should double check some of your posts! I'm the first one to say my spelling and grammar could be better! But you’re not far behind me at times!

Seems like a dangerous place to keep a loose cannon all charged up with the latest HCs, Tim!
