Sunday Downtime Pages: 12

fetch on Sun January 02, 2005 9:09 PM User is offlineView users profile

There was an hour or two of downtime tonight for some changes that I was having made to the database. Sorry for the lack of warning, I really didn't anticipate that many problems. My own fault for letting someone else work on this a little.

It's so hard to find good help these days. :-(

By the way, a one-armed midget stripper named "Nubby" just showed up at my house the other day. Thanks Tim!

How can you do anything with a computer in five minutes, using Nortons Clean Sweep, System Mechanics Pro, and crap cleaner to limit the number of entries in my registry, each program has to be ran over and over again until it finally comes up with no bad entries, then you can still find a lot of crap left over that none of these programs can find and each can find different errors. I still have 197,000 entries in my registry and have been cleaning up programs I no longer use.

Nero is still giving me fits with this new Sony burner, finally wrote to Nero and hope they have a solution, Sony says, contact Nero, I have a older 5.5 version working great on another computer, I even tried that, but it's an OE version and only works with one particular burner. Maybe Nero is trying to tell me to buy their program. At one time they offered me the CD for 12 bucks, but I was able to get that program working. But the constant cleaning up first before reloading, and that constant rebooting the box that takes forever.

Haven't reformatted my drives in over five years now, but tempted to do so, but the thought of trying to remember which drivers to use that work and done work, plus all those upgrades that are needed to make the box work, I can imagine spending at least 60 hours of work getting this computer back to where it was and its all because of the registry concept. MS should have a program that looks at what you have and writes a new registry. I started off with 230 KBytes, up to 1,700 KBytes now, but have seen some on other computers that I have worked on with registries over 10,000 KBytes. What a junk collecting file that is.

I noticed AC Kits was off line for a time this morning.

What I never knew that! Fetch must have broke something again as we are moving the main site also in the next week or so.

Hey Fetch why did the alarm not go off when the site was down. Or were you're pals wondering what that noise was again???????

Nick, a full blown Nero, downloaded from the WEB cost $69.95. You save $30 by downloading and not getting the doc or CD. It might be worth the investment to solve your never ending CD burning woes. Also, it would give you one less thing to complain/worry about.

NickD on Wed January 05, 2005 11:51 AM User is offline

LOL, sorry about the complaining, can also buy a sealed Nero Ultra retail version off of ebay for about twenty bucks plus three bucks shipping, but will let it go. The Sony came with two CD's, one labeled Sony that is all Nero stuff with half of it that doesn't even work as it is not licensed, the other was labled Nero, but an old 5.0 version that doesn't even work with my burner, it won't recognize it.

I learned if I just load Nero express, upgrade that, I get a working burner and cover designer and that is basically all I wanted. I also use InCD but had to upgrade that to the latest as the one that came with the Sony causes my harddrive to constantly click every second, the upgrade stopped that. Regarding Nero Showtime, the one that came with the Sony works, but the upgrade causes the DVD to constantly skip. It works fine on older DVD's, but not the ones with only Doby 5.1 surround, Nero want twenty more bucks for the surround plug-ins.

Its kind of like you buy something and you want it to work, I purchased a cheap DVD player from Wal-Mart that plays anything for 30 bucks, MP3, MP4, video, DVD's, audio CD's, came with a remote, just plugged it in, and it works. Was a bit frustrated with the Sony, it is not working out of the box. Nero suggested downloading all six packages, but all those were non-working programs, that is kind of misleading.

The version that came with the Sony does let me limit the read speed to a more reasonable 4X so at least I don't have to worry about a CD flying apart, so I guess I can forget about the DVD stuff and just burn disks safely with this thing.

> I noticed AC Kits was off line for a time this morning.

I think that was my fault actually. I was copying files from the dedicated server over to a new server for Tim and thought it would be done fairly quickly (only about 700 megs worth)....well as it turns out the number of files was in the tens or hundreds of thousands because the copy took about 4 - 5 hours over a shared network connection.

At some points during that time I had to restart some of the ackits.com web services since the server was focusing a little too much CPU on the copy command. :-)

Oh, and I turned Nubby away so I don't know if it was m/f. :-)

NickD - I've never had an OS for more than 2 years without a complete reformat. The Windows Registry is so much trash. Every time I install something I keep a copy of the install file on a separate physical drive, and when it comes time to reboot I run them all one after the other.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, midget porn takes up just as much HD space as normal porn - turns out the images aren't halfsize even if the midgets are. ;-)

Hmmm, is there a connection between transferring hundreds of thousands of files and porn? Are there porn files buried in this forum someplace?

About the only thing I ran across, (so far), is some guy posted a photo of his car with the fender skirts off, is that porn? LOL.

Happy that Chick is finally switching to ducks, long overdue.

Tim/Chick,

When you say 'refreshing', you mean that the forum isn't showing new posts immediately?

TRB on Wed January 05, 2005 7:42 PM User is offlineView users profile

No, after you view a thread the color of the icon changes showing you have viewed that post. It turns back when someone responds or a new posts is created. It seems to me that it is taking a longer time to show that you have already visited a post. Personally I could care less abut that feature but you know how some of these individuals are!

It's like the spell checker that will not accept a new word. Sure it says it does but run spell check again and it will tell you that that word is wrong or not on file.

Fetch, what it is when you go to the site, the mailbox will be up...you read the new post, come back later and "think" there is a new question or answer but it's the same..To get the flag down I have to hit the refresh on the top of the site twice to make the flag go down...No big deal...But it's not right...

I have a mail box like that on the road, I raise the flag when I want to mail something, and when the mailman er person comes, he puts it back down. Maybe your mailperson is not on the stick, LOL.

The big difference I have noticed so far on the new host, it's slower than the old one, but maybe that is not too bad, gives me a second to think before I stick my foot in my mouth. As soon as I clicked on the old host, the entire thread would pop up in an instant, now kind of like one post at a time, then another, wait a bit, then another.

See the spell checker recognizes mailman, but not mailperson. Dang, I hate having to be politically correct.

That's odd as the forum seems a lot faster to me! Speed was one of the first things I noticed after the change.

Maybe its my server, the suckers increased the price from 20 to 40 bucks a month claiming 384 KBytes per second, think my old phone modem was faster, may go back to that at ten bucks per month.

MikeH on Thu January 06, 2005 5:26 PM User is offline

The T1 we have supports 16 phone lines and a 512kb Internet hub. So, I don't really notice the difference. Although, WEB pages with pics tend to load faster than a dialup. I tried the advanced Netzero for an emergency backup (in case the T1 goes down) and it really did a better than average job. I don't like spending $15 a month for an unused service, but, what's a guy to do? You have to run their proprietary program to dial up and it always, eventually, goes to their WEB site, but the cost vs performance is pretty reasonable.

TRB on Thu January 06, 2005 5:43 PM User is offlineView users profile

Been looking into the T1 deal here but my dad signed a 3 year phone deal last year. Buy out of the phone deal is $ 1500.00. If I paid that off nubby would not be able to visit Fetch anymore!

Too much work to lower that flag especially if you clean your browsers cache and your cookie files, all the grayed out posts turn to dark blue that have to be opened again and you have to reenter your users name and password if you can remember it. If your cache is too small, and do lots of browsing, same as resetting it.
