Computer balloon

Makroll on Fri March 25, 2005 2:06 PM User is offline

I notice there is some serious computer talk going here on at times. (sometimes not so serious)
But anyway, does any one know how to get rid of those popup balloons that come up so often.
Some I've found how to get rid of but not this one......
The one that pops up when internet logs on.
It will say ..... "your are now connected to the internet"
It covers up part of the status bar at the bottom of the screen that tells me if I'm receiving mail.
Does anyone know how to stop that particular balloon from coming up?
Thanks

My 15 year old daughter in an attempt to find free MP3 downloads, completely crashed her computer, then she got on her mothers computer and did the same thing. My wife likes Outlook, but that crazy program only lets you save your e-mail on drive C that I like to reserve for the OS only. Spybot found over 50 spyware programs on her computer, but the damage was already done. I still use Win98SE, but couldn't even get in with a standard boot disk, fortunately and ME boot disk let me get into to transfer her e-mail files and address book to another partition. I have her drives backed using Norton's Ghost, but that would have lost about two months worth of e-mails. But at least DOS let me save her valuable files, installed the backup and transferred her files back to drive C.

My daugher was very upset she caused this, just had to explain to her that there are mean nasty people on the web that try to lure you in so they can cream you. Wouldn't it be nice to have the opportunity to shoot back.

There are popup ad blockers that also block legitimate popups, such as on the ackits.com site where if you want to see what a part looks like in the list, that is a popup. But there are also a number of very nasty sites on the web that just entering those sites downloads tons of spyware. I have found Firefox to be more immune to these sites, my daughter was using IE that will pick up anything.

Until MS fixes this, have to take your chances. I have enabled Spybot immunization and trying their hidden mode of operation that is suppose to block downloading these nasty programs. But getting on the web is like trying to walk across the Dan Ryan interstate during the rush hour, you are taking your own life in your hands.

The only reason to have IE on your computer is because MS requires it for it's update service. Otherwise, you don't need it. Mozilla can block all popups. Yes there are a few that get thru like Phoenix U but otherwise it is popup free.

Using windows xp right now. hated it at first but now after using it for about half year, I would never change back. It has a "system restore" that will revert back to when your computer was working fine if you get tangled up. With all the updates in place I've had no problems.

Nick. What do you think of Norton's Ghost?

Nortons Ghost is great, I use the 2001 version, but copy my OS start up files on it as they are using that old IBM DOS version that doesn't boot up all the time. Just make a floppy for either backing up a partition or an entire drive or reloading an existing image. Normally back up a partition before loading new programs on the box. With Ghost loaded in Windows, can also just restore parts of the file, opens up a window like explorer, select the file you want, and the destination, then hit restore.

The later versions of Ghost require hand typing in a rather long registration number that is very annoying each time you want to do something.

I prefer IE over Firefox, much easier to manage bookmarks on IE, whoops, I mean favorites and many sites I use won't work with Firefox. Wonder if MS is making extra bucks with all those damned popups that appear in an MS window. Either program is free, don't mind the commercials that much, but when it crashes a box, that can be annoying.

Had XP crash so bad on one computer, it even crashed the restore program, and if you are using passwords for yourself, make sure you make a back up floppy or you can spend 600 bucks to buy software to retrieve your data or just lose it. XP is nice because it comes with all of the latest drivers saving that effort, but a bit too automated for me, still like to have some control. Also good to have a gigabyte of RAM in the box, not for programs, but for XP along with a couple of 40 GB HD's.

Why do file names like MY computer, MY documents, MY photos, MY music, etc. bug me?

My goodness Nick, that's because their your files and you don't need to be reminded about it all the time.

Ha, wouldn't be so bad if MS would change My Documents to His Documents when someone else sits at my computer.

I think your right Nick.
Keep this up and I'll be a senior member in no time.
But I kinda hate to see anyone look into all [myposts] to see how I got there.

Nick, Nick, Nick, I suppose it's what you are used to. Firefox is not Mozilla but close. Manageing Bookmarks (favorites) is very, very easy. Doing a ctrl-b allows you te manage your bookmarks without using the mouse. IE is really clumbsy by comparison.

Mike, I must be really screwed up then, I went to http://www.mozilla.org/ and downloaded Firefox, at the heading of this browser it says Mozilla Firefox. So after reading your post I went back to the Mozilla site. Is the browser different in the Mozilla Suite that has all of that other stuff?

" Web-browser, advanced e-mail and newsgroup client, IRC chat client, and HTML editing made simple -- all your Internet needs in one application." Or are you referring to yet another browser?

Ha, lets make it easy, would you please post the link for the Mozilla browser you are talking about? I thought Firefox was the name of the Mozilla browser.

MikeH on Mon March 28, 2005 6:24 PM User is offline

Try this address - Mozilla Suite
I currently run 1.7.3 and never have a popup - will - almost never.

NickD on Tue March 29, 2005 5:57 AM User is offline

The browser in the Mozilla Suite" Web-browser, advanced e-mail and newsgroup client, IRC chat client, and HTML editing made simple -- all your Internet needs in one application." is not FireFox? I assumed it was and didn't want all that other stuff in my box. Not getting popups or spyware with Firefox either and use it on my searches, but many encrypted sites cannot be load with FF, so open IE, but will never search randomly using IE, my box will get loaded with trash.

Has anyone tried to get one of those Linux OS to actually be useable? I've bought about 15 different varieties but finally gave up.
I've about decided Bill Gates has things wrapped up.

Also.. Is Mozilla really better than IE or is it just Bill Gates we would like to ruffle a little? ho, ho, ho

MikeH on Tue March 29, 2005 10:38 PM User is offline

As I am now employed full time for the first time in 2 years it is hard for me to respond quickly. From my perspective, Mozilla is far and away better than IE. Mostly because it is harder to punch thru it with a virus. Users of Mozilla tend to be more sophisticated in their internet usage. (This is my opinion and not that of the management - my circle of friends I guess.) All Mozilla updates and enhancements are a contribution of many, many people in various lines of work not limited to the IT industry. So, changes tend to be more useful than cosmetic. Nick is right, though. There are WEB sites that can not be loaded with Mozilla. Other sites can be viewed but downloads will not occur because of the way the HTML code is written. The MS upgrade WEB site is a good example. You can view it all day but can download OS upgrades only with IE. I only use IE when dealing with MS or when I absolutely have no other choice. Nick is right about another thing. Firefox is a subset of the Mozilla suite. However, it seems that changes get applied to the suite before the individual components. My bigest Mozilla like is the ease with which I can put WEB sites onto my Personal Toolbar. Also, "Manage Bookmarks" allows me to arrange my bookmarks anyway I want. You can not do that with IE. It doesn't matter how you arrange your Favorites, they almost always get sorted back alphabetically (without a special plugin). I hate that. I guess I am a comitted Mozilla fan. The "Mail and Newsgroups" is great for the way it allows me to quickly set up new folders to save email. Again, not in alpha sequence but in the arangement I want.

About Linux. It is a great OS regardless of the flavor that you use. While the code for Linux is public domain, open source, unless you are an HTML/XTML expert, don't bother. For file servers and email servers it is great because hackers have let the OS be, for now. I think it will not be long before Linus becomes another target. Gamers will never use Linus because it does not support the HOT graphics boards that are required. I don't think that is going to change - too much effort with lettle reward.
