Portable Air Conditioners

Has anyone used one of those portable air conditioner units in their garage or anywhere else for that matter? I was wondering how effectively they work.

They come in different btu ratings and are generally more expensive than window units. I'd get a window unit but that's not going to work for my situation and I'd sure like the garage to be a little cooler when I'm working out there.

We have quite a few of those portable units over here, they either have an exhaust hose of about 4 inch diameter that must be fed outside the building, or they have two components, the indoor unit with evaporator and compressor, and a condenser that dangles outside the window on an umbilical. I like neither and would go for the window unit, at least the window unit doesn't take up valuable floor space. My choice would be a mini split, I dont know what they sell for in the US, but they are a very reasonable price even for a decent quality unit here in the UK

If the garage is insulated then a 10,000 BTU should do it quite well. In the U.S I have seen them at the local discount houses for around $200. But the more efficient the model the more the cost. Higher efficiency means a lower utility bill.
