Today I had time to finish up the engine with all the new valve parts that I got. Got it all back together, engine fired right up and ran at fast idle (1700rpm) for about 10 minutes while I checked for leaks, etc. Shut it down, let the coolant settle 1/2 hour, and ran it for another 10 minutes at fast idle. I dropped it back to curb idle, now it hums without the slightest valve click! Adjusted the timing and topped off the coolant, everything looks great. Tomorrow I'll take it out for a test drive, but I'm sure it will be fine.
Thanks again to everyone who gave me advice, I'm sure this repair will be long lasting. Hope everyone has a great holiday!!

Your whole problem was the lock nuts..Shame you didn't figure that out before having to do all that work..But looks like you're all set now...Good luck and happy Holidays to you too..
