'93 Taurus AOXD problems

voyager on Thu February 09, 2006 8:44 PM User is offline

Year: 93
Make: ford
Model: taurus
Engine Size: 3.8

Help me, please. This car I bought - there's a plug pulled out of it's recepticle on the top of a metal box on top of the transmission. The car has reverse, but when in D or OD you take of in 3rd - no 1st, 2nd,m or OD. When you put the plug in to the recepticle - you got nothing - no reverse, no forward gears. Anybody out there who can clue me in? I would really appreciate any help...Jim

The place to get "great" help with this problem is over at Batauto.com Just pot under domestic or transmissions. But we did have a simular problem on a 94 Taurus, and sent it to the trans shop. Was just a speed sensor, bad news is that it is inside the trans (some are very easy on top of trans, but not Ford) so it cost a few bucks to have it changed..Not saying that is your problem, but there is hope if you get some gears by pluging or unpluging wires..Let us know how you make out..

Time is going fast, was 8 years ago in 1998 I took a test drive on an 89 Lincoln T&C my Ford dealer wanted $5,900.00 for, then my 89 Continental was in top form, beautiful exterior and interior, and everything working great. He would let me that T&C for $5,800.00 if I traded my Continental in, but would let me have that T&C for $5,000.00 if I purchased it outright!

Are you crazy I asked him? No, he said it costing them on the average of $3,000 to repair the air suspension, $2,500 to replace the AXOD, and about $2,000.00 to repair the head gaskets in the Continental , so he doesn't want my car. I did not do my homework when I first purchased that Continental, Continental was always a reliable car. You don't have the air suspension, but still have the same AXOD and 3.8L, I hope they paid you to take it. Sounds to me like your forward clutch is shot and while I have had many an AT apart in my day, just too many special purpose tools to work on this thing, plus almost impossible to remove it due to the subframe design. If the metal box is the Vss and disconnected, would take off in first gear and stay there, is accessible by removing the belt drive train.

Consumers Report gave an excellent report on the Taurus back in 88 I believe as a real challenge to the Honda Accord, but since then, they had to eat their words over and over again. The Continental uses exactly the same drive train as the Taurus except has a larger AT cooler and a shut down thermostat is the AT gets too hot, what a ripoff from Ford.
