1999 Chev Silverado Tranny Fluid Quantity

jbrooks26 on Fri June 02, 2006 9:18 PM User is offline

Engine Size: 5.3 L

Hello Guys,

I was hoping that one of you with an AllData subscription for this truck could look up the amount of transmission fluid that I will need to change the filter. It is a 99 silverado Z71 with air conditioning and automatic transmission. It has a towing package from the factory and has the factory trans cooler on it too. Thanks for any input you can give.

Josh

I changed the filter in a turbo 400 a couple of weeks ago, also installed a new pan that was deeper and even had a drain plug, just kept on adding AT fluid with a hot engine until the dip stick showed it was full, that took 6 1/2 quarts. As a gauge, did measure how much drained out so I knew approximately how much to buy.

6 quarts, but as stated best to watch the dip stick.

99 Chevy Silverado auto trans. specs.

4L60-E pan removal, 5 qts., overhaul, 11.0 qts.;

4L80-E pan removal, 7.7 qts., overhaul, 13.5 qts.

Be sure of which type your truck has! As the other guys stated, best to watch the dipstick with a hot engine to get an accurate reading, because operating with 1 quart overfull can blow a seal.

Fluid is checked with engine running on level ground at idle, in park, can run through the gears with the service brake on to make sure fluid reaches all parts of the transmission before the final check. Some dipsticks have both a cold and a hot full level, but I like testing it hot.

Great info guys, thanks. I never thought about measuring how much I took out, good tip. Some of the easiest solutions seem to be really simple, yet more often than not they are overlooked. Thanks again, I plan to get this done this afternoon if I have time.

I have a truck just like his but a 98 GMC how do you determine the type of tranny you have or model # mine has the 5.7 350 1/2 ton has the tow package with tranny cooler involved with the radiator it has 118,230 miles and it's been serviced before according to the previous owner at 60,000 should I just not worry about it yet?

There are a few links on the internet that help with visual ID. You can also find out by decoding the RPO numbers in your glove box.

Kicked around buying a 4L85 for my motorhome, has all kinds of peps and would be nice for fuel economy with the OD and torque lockup features. But the work and money involved and wonder about the payback if any, need the AT with no trade in, the electronic module, not cheap, an electronic to motor converter to run the cable driven speedometer, and some drive shaft modification, plus trying to find a panel that has the extra gears on it. At least 3,000 bucks, plus lots of work.

Another trick to changing fluid and filters, is that normally the fluid level is higher than the pan and the reason, why I am told, they don't have a drain plug anymore, is that they want to make sure you change the filter. Isn't that about the dumbest thing you heard today? So when you drop the pan, you will get a shower, helps to remove all the bolts first except the two outside ones in the front and the center in the back. Loosen those, but don't remove them, if the pan sticks, prying it loose causes it to snap and you will get a shower, but try to lower the rear first with a large container.

Another way is to disconnect either of the oil cooler lines, one should have a rubber hose on it and put a rubber hose on the other feeding both hoses into like a five gallon can. Run the engine and let the pump push most of the fluid into the container. Always will be some left in the pan, but not as much.

I also use RTV on both sides of the gasket, clean the bolts and coat those with RTV as well, acts as a seal and keeps the bolts from getting loose, should only find about a teaspoon of transmission parts in the bottom of the pan, if a lot more, you got problems, also like to rip open the filter and see what's inside, never found any money, but may find something to ruin your day.

Was please what I saw in my Turbo 400, so why change it? Lots of miles left in that baby and the price of gas will come down, expecially if I converted to the 4L85.

Jegs and other parts houses make a pan drain plug kit.

MrBillPro,

The shape of a transmission pan determines what type it is. Such as square, square with one corner cut off, etc.
