I'm curious what current labor rates are around the country.....what shops that just do a/c work charge and what dealerships are charging these days?
Gregg
Our FAA certified shop carrying 5 million bucks of liability insurance charge 40 buck an hour, and document everything done in attorney fashion in case of a lawsuit.
Our car dealers where you are told, dey all do dat charge 76 bucks an hour with no choice of getting a know it all high school kid or a mechanic that has been around the block a couple of times.
Our truck dealers charge a hundred bucks an hour with no idea how long a job will take, just sign your name on a blank check.
For a small engine tune up fixed charge, buy a new lawn mower, it's cheaper.
Never really got body shop labor rates, let them fight that out with my insurance company.
Pretty much the standard cost for replacing a broken windshield is 150 bucks if you don't have insurance, if you carry $250.00 deductible, the price is over 500 bucks, so you pay the 250 deductible and your insurance company claims to pay the rest. That huge windshield on my motor home, and that is a big piece of glass cost me 220 bucks, but that was after a bit of searching.
Not sure about RV, motorcycle, or marine dealers labor rates, but feel it's over a hundred bucks an hour.
I pay myself anywhere from one to five cents an hour, but don't expect me to work my can off for that, take my time and do it when I feel like it.
$ 75.00 an hour
$ 150.00 for custom fabrication.

thanks for replies....I once worked in FAA cert repair shop....everything super documented...rebuilding corporate jet
brakes /wheels/tires.....don't know what they charged the customer..but I think I made about $6.50 an hour....back in the
late 70s.
Wonder what automotive mechs making these days in local shops and dealerships...I know what Jet mechanics make...
and that aint enough considering the responsibility and liability......

All depends on if a mechanic wants to work or talk on their cell phone and smoke cigarettes. We price out jobs based off a flat rate program designed for auto a/c. Mechanic gets 1/3rd of the charged rate. If it calls for 4 hours and they complete it in 4 hours. They would be paid $ 25.00 an hour. If they do it in 2 hours they would be paid $ 50.00 an hour. But if it's like what usually happens. They take 24 hours to do a 4 hour job and complain they are not making enough.

Freedoms just another word for nothing left to lose
Tired of baby sitting people that are being paid to do a job. Don't take that wrong I have some good people here. But I have also had some people that I have been to nice to because they had families and such. Get in and get the job done and you "WILL" make money.
-------------------------
Tim ...thats sounds really fair to me...both from the customer and employee standpoint. I worked in a couple dealerships
in college and earning was based on what they earned the dealership..not a real good place to start out as time was money
to those guys.....and then there was a pecking order..the long timers got all the cake jobs and the parts were always
waiting for them....seems like they took good care of the parts guys also. Some of those senior guys made big bucks. Then I worked for Sears automotive..the only
non-union shop in Pittburgh area...got strait pay by the hour. That was a great place to learn all the guys helpful. Had a great boss
who always gave maximum raise when you worked hard...thinks I got up to about $10 and hour in 18 months..that was good
money for college kid in those days.
Then they would throw us catered beer parties about 4 times a year and threw pretty awesome Christmas party every year...
it was great place to work and we had the highest earnings for Sears in the state. Sear even supplied all our tools.
Heck that's just summer pay. Winter time when they don't have more than a vehicle or two a week. I pay them 40 hours a week anyway. Of course it's not at $ 25.00 an hour. But when you add in company paid health care, it's not chump change.
-------------------------
Tim...yea I rember the slow months...usually after Chrismas...we were just glad to have jobs then! Guess a seasonal business like yours would be tuff in wintertime.....
So I take it your all for global warming then! Ha!
Too bad it doesn't snow out there...least up north we went thru battery and winter tire season
that kept us going til Cristmas time...Then we had the worst roads in the country in PA so front
end season was pretty much year round....Heck I remember doing almost complete front end rebuilds on Caddys with 40k on em.
Guess health care big expense for anyone offering it...its a national problem....don't even care to speculate on the answers.....that will spur some interesting debate here I'm sure! Hell can't even decide which way to side on the latest SCHIP bill...too much B.S. going around. Can't seem to agree with anyones spin. But a guy making 80k with 4 children in NYC? Bet he doesn't have much
discretionary cash laying around!
Here' s hoping for alot of winter business for u this year!!!!
After reading all the rates, think I will start paying myself a dime an hour now for working on my own and relative cars, time for a raise.
