USA Productivity up 2.2% on last quarter.

NickD on Sun August 10, 2008 10:42 AM User is offline

Heard that on the news, but also heard something like a quarter of a million USA jobs were also lost this last quarter. That leads to the question, what kind of jobs are these that can be lost without hurting the productivity?

This great country of ours seems to always have slow times, layoffs always seem to occur first in production, lay off a few that scares the hell out of the other workers, so they automatically work much harder, not doing their own work, by making up for the people that are history.

But wonder even about UK Techs comment about either talking to one of two guys for good information, so what are the rest of the people doing there that don't even know the very basics about the company they are working for? I can't even count the number of times I have called as a customer, even to large corporations with a major order to place having to talk to some guy that doesn't even know they manufacture that part. Are these the jobs that are being lost?

Ha, and how does one go about finding a job like that, I was always expected to produce, do you marry the bosses daughter? Just seems strange with all these jobs lost, productivity is going up, but somehow our government should also do some trimming, some major trimming.

I don't think sales in the a/c business has been very pretty this year. At least that's what shows on the books and what I hear from many suppliers.

That happened back in the 70's when gas prices skyrocketed from 30 to 75 cents a gallon, people were not buying new cars, and we thought the aftermarket would take off as people would be fixing their old cars. They didn't do that either and the aftermarket parts business went way down.

For what it's worth Tim, it is dead over here too.. Summer just hasn't happened, construction has ground to a halt and a lot of half built housing estates have been mothballed, a lot of guys are finding it very tough. On the up side there are a fair few folk who are spending to improve their homes rather than move and saving money on fuel is the important thing, even my new website has a green tinge to it. Managed to lock my electricity and gas prices till 2011 and have been filling my loft with even more insulation

Nice website Karl, but no plumbing, carpentry, siding, flooring, roofing, bricklaying, concrete work, excavation? And what about selling storm windows, that use to be really big here. Could also offer maid service.

Do you actually have performance specifications on the Toshiba heat pump? All I can find here is advertising BS. Hate to go to a bar and brag that I have a 25 peak HP heat pump, will feel stupid saying that even if drunk.

Thanks Tim, I'll get Randal to whizz up a banner when he gets back from the Czech Republic, he said that he was off to watch the MotoGP which I think is code for getting drunk and chasing women

Ha Nick,... Tosh will give us specs if we hassle them for them and I have a copy for their current range but all manufacturers here have to test according to the same criteria. You and I both know that the figures mean nothing these days other than being a guide as to how much better they are compared to the next machine...The trouble with heat pumps is that when you need them most is when they are at their least efficient but they are ideally suited to grey miserable Britain where it never gets really cold. what I have done for myself is to run my own units to compare them with my own heating and then work it back to simulate the cost of heating with oil and Propane... Against Natural Gas in a decent boiler, then pound for pound, a heat pump loses and is more costly to run. When placed against LPG and oil, then the heat pump comes out about 5% cheaper and against electric only heating then it is a no brainer. The nice advantage of heat pumps is that each individual room can be heated or not heated as the heat pump unit can heat a room very quickly indeed, so although the Natural gas is cheaper overall to heat a house, the heat pump is cheaper to run if you only heat the rooms that you use.. Daikins units use PIR sensors to detect if a room is occupied or not so it knows to run the unit or to switch off.. I prefer not to use specifications (But they do sound good when selling) but use real world pounds, shillings and pence and I wouldn't sell a heat pump if I didn't think that it would save a customer money

There are lies, damned lies and specifications

Trianco do have a simple graph of their output against air temperature which is quite useful, I'll see if I can find my Toshiba specs..

Having said that I've been looking at Water furnace ground source heat pumps with a view to replacing a customers oil boiler to run his under floor heating.. They quote a COP of 5 when the scandinavian and German manufacturers are quoting around 4.3. Perhaps it is the testing methods that are different. Do you have any experience of them, are they reasonably reliable?

Oh and as for all the rest of the stuff, I get a buddy to do most of the building work, If you had ever seen my brickwork, you'd die laughing

Gee, I left off, "painting", in my list of extra services, LOL.

Yeah, with our daughter gone and with our new gas hot water heater, wife and I used only 6 therms of natural gas last month, seems hardly worth while to install that on demand Bosch electric hot water heater. Still watching the price of copper wire.

Recall reading a long long time ago, the COP of a heat pump dropped down to unity at around 20*F so seemed attractive if I could get at least a "2" in those many days when it's above freezing. Even finding the best price on a pump and doing the work myself, still is a sizable investment and hate to throw money away. Our natural gas prices have been keeping up with the price of the car gas at the pumps while our electrical rates were remaining stable. But then in one month, our electrical rates more than doubled! So it's a neck and neck race again where efficiency plays a role, then payback. Seems to be some control with natural gas, the people on LP are really getting nailed.

Can only conclude that we are on the wrong end of the energy stick, would be nice to be on the other side and rake in all that cash. Waste of time to contact your congressman and can only wonder if they are also on the receiving end.
