So we have an order yesterday for a compressor and the customer selected UPS Next day Air. No big deal we get the order together and process it through our UPS World-ship computer. Freight charge is $ 25.00 dollars more then what the online storefront software calculated. This software gets it rates from UPS or a version of them so I start digging into this since I've noticed this before. In the set-up module there is a spot for air and ground fuel surcharge. We had some single digit numbers in there trying to help match the actual cost of shipments. Next to this was a hyper-link to UPS explaining the fuel surcharge. To my amazement it was 27 percent on air shipments. While not happy about seeing that! UPS at least shows up daily to pick up packages. We dropped the FedEx option because the independent ground contractors would not pick up daily even if we called them and told them we had packages.

USPS is always my choice.....when given one. They used to pick-up, but maybe not anymore. UPS is the least favorite 'service' in my view. FedEx is better the ups for the person who is paying the frieght. ups doesn't even knock on the door anymore....drop/run!

At 2, I went home with a 10. At 10 I woke up with a 2 !!
I always quote UPS charges using their online service because the fuel surcharges are changing all the time. I cannot trust that the same weight and service today will be the same rates tomorrow; and I have seen it change from one day to the next with that exact scenario. I agree that Fed-Ex and UPS rates are very similar, but the charges for regular pick services are much higher with Fed-Ex and outrageous for one time pick up, if you do not sign up for that daily pick up service. When we call them for such a pick up as needed, it requires repeat calls and ends up with a pick up 2 or 3 days later; this is not service. I refuse to use Fed-Ex with the exception of the customer who is requesting it be charged to their Fed-Ex account, and we will beat the crappy service issues and one time pick up charges by dropping it off at a Kinko's on the way home in the afternoon. Unfortunately when it comes to Motor Freight, Fed-Ex Freight has proven to be just as ridiculous with add on fees and very unreliable for same day pick up, black balled by me also.
