Can't find a Notebook (Laptop) HD for an HP computer.

NickD on Wed January 28, 2009 8:40 AM User is offline

What happened to standards, none of my local stores sells 2.5" drives, well a one or two do at three times the price. It's a SATA drive, I did order a 320 GB Seagate that appeared to be the correct one from all the specifications. But had to send it back, the connector was different. This one had a rectangular power connector but used an edge contact PCB that would slide horizontally into the main board connector.

What the HP uses is a connector on the bottom of the drive with vertical pins on the main board, has two tabs on the opposite sides you insert in first, then push it straight down for contact. While zillions of photos of HD are shown on the net, they only show the top of the drive, never the connector end. Both styles use a plastic pull tab, but the one on the HP is on the connector side where the other is on the opposite side. Not much help as can't tell from the shown top view, which side is which.

Even went to the HP store, they don't sell HD's for laptops, the computer is an HP dv9420us, does have two HD compartments that is nice, would like to add another job in that empty hole. Some guy on the bay sells a drive for the dv9420us, but a couple hundred bucks for a 60 GB drive is kind of steep.

What happened to standards?

Hmmm, thanks, I think, a little bit steep for a no name HD.

"250 Gigabyte Hard Drive for Hewlett-Packard Pavilion Notebook dv9420us
OEM Part # equivalent: n/a

Kahlon Part #: KHEW-250.0AS

Availability: In Stock
Regular Price: $183.00

Web Price: $173.00

Toshiba, WD's, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Samsung, and my favorite, Seagate run in the 60-80 price range for a 320 GB, most with free shipping. 500 GB's run about 30-40 bucks more. Even visited the home sites of these companies, show spec sheets, but no connectors. Wondering if HP is having a custom drive made for their computers.

Here a photo of the computer:

Detail of the HD connector.

And of the WD drive.

Least I know they exists. Have a shot of a Toshiba, but have to reboot my computer first.

The Toshiba in the computer:

And the bottom view of the Toshiba:

Did get a Seagate 500GB external for 130 bucks with a USB, but just one more thing to carry around. Can you remember when you said wow when 40 MB drives first came out? With all these videos, photos, MP3's, etc, 500 GB ain't enough. Wife does have two 120GB in her computer, but filling up fast. Vista and a couple of programs ate up one of her HD's.

In 1983 I bought an IBM AT and put 2 CDC 30MB drives on it. They were $2000 each. I did a lot of development with just 512KB of add-on memory - the AT came with 64KB stock. Lots of 8 bit memory chips.

Nick, are you sure that you have just the drive, in most laptops Ive seen the mfgr uses an adapter connector to interface the drive to the mb. just a thought. hope it helps

NickD on Wed January 28, 2009 6:32 PM User is offline

The top photo above shows the socket on the mainboard of the computer, one below it is the connector on the drive. Fourth photo down shows the drive inserted in the computer, really no space for an adapter cable. I wish they stuck with IDE, guys are always changing stuff.

Nick, I'm not thinking of a cable but a type of "" shim / adapter connector"" between the drive ide pins and the connector on the motherboard because in the photo of the drive connector it kinda looks like to me there is a connector attached to the piece of metal shielding that is put under the drive over it's electronics, I'll shut down and take a couple of pictures of mine and be back in a little bit

You mean like this?

With this adapter?

And an edge PCB connector like this?

Now I feel like an idiot, least a moron for not realizing HP is using a carrier for this notebook. Or maybe it's because I am trying to get my income taxes done and have a twisted brain from trying to make sense out of their worksheets.

Thanks for waking me up, I sent back a perfectly usable Seagate 320 GB 2.5" HD I could have used and out $6.56 shipping.

What my goal is, my wife and step son have essentially the same computer, but hers came with two HD's in it, his only has one. Was going to pull a 120GB out of hers and replace hers with a 320 GB, and give him her 120GB, so he would have space to back up his one HD. But if my brain is together now, I will be short that carrier and adapter.
Will have to see if I can purchase one someplace.

HP is crazy, that have more different notebook models than the IRS has forms. Thanks for bringing me too.

Is that with a W-2? Those are easy, but have a business with a years worth of invoices, receipts, mileage logs, expenses, sales tax reports, amortization, and depreciation. So can take an hour or two longer.

Just chatted with HP on that HD caddy I need, $145.35 for that piece of tin, that piece of plastic, and four screws, son will have to live with an external. Did get the part number for the mounting kit as they call it, 434106-001. Did a google, aftermarket units available, but still at 45 bucks. Kid will have to live with an external at those prices.

Wife like the computer we got her son so much, she wanted one too. Nine months later, paid $240 less, but hers came with two 120 GB HD's and 2 GB of RAM, his came with one 120 GB drive and 1GB of RAM.

Can't say the same about my electric and natural gas bill, same usage as the year before, but a thousand bucks more this year than last. Didn't get to my gasoline receipts yet, but has to be much more, least until election time when it finally dropped.

Not complaining, we are just getting much higher quality electricity and natural gas.

What about AC Kits, have an accounting department for that? Inventory to take? Does the federal government pay you for that? Or do you that from the goodness of your heart, not to mention, staying out of jail.

Still have to sort all that stuff out, categorize and list or enter it. Haven't had an audit now in 15 years, but do my taxes like I am going to have an audit, just in case.

Just can't believe that price they are asking for that 434106-001 disk caddy as they call it, anywhere from 45 to 145 bucks, maybe with luck will find one someplace out of an old computer, must have at least 30,000 bucks I paid for worthless junk in my storage space on computer crap I already spent I should get rid of but have to pay a recycling charge on. I don't even want to think about what I paid for the worthless pile of junk I have sitting in my garage and driveway.

So does Turbotax check out for errors in your 1099's and W-2's or do you assume they are all correct. Found a $2,200 error in one of my 1099's that if I didn't get corrected would either have been audited or pay that amount extra in additional taxes. First I had to prove to myself it wasn't my error, then second had to convince the people that wrote it was their error, that took almost a full day. Computers may not make errors, but all these numbers have to be manually entered. Hell, even I make mistakes with entries.

My CPA looked over a new clients previous tax returns last week. He found over $60,000 in taxes that the guy should not have had to pay - 4 year period. One company that sent out his 1099 had radically over stated his income. When contacted yhey actually told my CPA that they were "not responsible" for the accuracy of the 1099s they send out. Seems they were ignorant of IRS law or were choosing to just ignore it. They had to be threatened with a law suit to get it fixed.
