Earth Hour!

"Earth Hour" is tonight at 03/28/09 @ 8:30PM and I certainly will be doing my part. Since all my lights are Insteon controlled, I have programmed ALL of them to turn on at full brightness from 8:30PM to 9:30PM, after which all lighting will return to the normal evening scene. I've also programmed my dishwasher (with water heating on) to run at 8:30pm along with the washing machine. I'll make sure to have each and every TV and computer running. I'll also turn the water temperature on my boiler up from 140F to the max 240F.

I'm just wondering if I should start all the cars and run them for the hour, along with the snowblower, lawnmower, and generator (transfer switch off, of course), or would that be overkill?

You think I should run the air compressor and air conditioning?

This is so friggen STUPID.... the world has truly gone mad. I was watching the news and couldn't believe how many IDIOTS they were interviewing who thought this was great idea. Why not go a step further and turn all the power off, including subways, trams, elevators, hospitals with patients on life support... why stop with just the lights? Planes should shut their engines down too in mid flight. After all, we're trying to save the planet right???

What are all of your plans for Earth Hour?

As Bob Grant has said, "IT'S SICK OUT THERE AND GETTING SICKER!!!"

I tossed a 5.70x8 tire in the woodstove, then used the A/C to modulate a comfortable room temperature...

Made as much sense as the bozos promoting this crap.

Wife is on medical call this weekend, we were gone all day yesterday on emergency calls, so I missed it. But:

"Turn off your lights for Earth Hour, record your vote and share it with the world! Here's how:"

Seems like if you wanted to make a statement would have loaded your yard with search and spot lights, running appliances in your home doesn't do that.

Hey guys and gals(?) - voluntarily turning off all your lights sends a signal to the govt that is would be O/K for them to turn off your power on a regular basis so as to conserve energy. This country needs its power and the industry that comes from it. The latest stimulus has awarded Google with a contract to develop energy monitors so your power consumption can be monitored. More crap for us to swallow. I am tired of my rights being trampled on!!!!!!!!!!

Mike:

It has been going on here in Las Vegas for years. The power company had a program to install a radio control on your HVAC unit. They were able to shut down the compressor by remote control. They promised to only shut it down for 50% of the time during peak hours, and never more than a half hour at a time. The got the sheeple to agree by paying them for each shutdown, up to about 30 bucks a year...

When I bough this house it had a radio on one 5 ton unit. I removed it & restored the hack job wiring. When I tossed it on the counter at the the local power co office they had a fit. Screaming about the "contract" they had with ME. I explained that it was their property, and the contract was with the previous owner of the house. Suddenly they wanted it back on, and offered all sorts of "incentives". I told them to recall the attitude they gave me earlier - and to go pound sand.

The compressor shutdown crap was a mess, so they have a new (3 years old) program. It is a thermostat that THEY can control remotely. They will put them in for FREE, and knock 20 bucks a year off of the power bill. I am amazed at the idiots that sign up for this crap. When it is 110f outside, raising the temp to 80f for a few hours does not save jack. You spend more cooling everything back down to 72 after the heat soak. This is about CONTROL, not savings.

We can use all the energy we want, just as long as you can pay for it.

Awww crap Nick! I should've come here for suggestions well in advance of Earth Hour. I love your suggestion about search and spot lights, though I did have a pretty good lighting load with all my outdoor spot lights on - nearly 2 dozen 90W bulbs - all at full brightness, not to mention the other outdoor light fixtures, plus all the indoor recessed lighting... got cans all over with real bulbs, not those weenie CF bulbs. My eyes were starting to hurt after 15 minutes with all that lighting, but it was worth it. The house really stood out amidst the darkness.

I love Bohica's story about the thermostat, and I could see them publishing names of "excess energy users" on the Internet with this Google energy crap. Then you'll have scum outside your house protesting over your energy usage like the what happened with the AIG executives with their bonuses. Don't know why I should really care about them - I should be happy - after all, who did all those Fairfield Greenwich, CT people vote for? Elections have consequences.

Avoid using Google. It's a despicable company, and you can get just as good search results with Yahoo (often better).

Things are really going to hell in handbasket, and in such a hurry.
