Talked to a customer in WI yesterday and it was warmer there than here in Atlanta. Calling for a "dusting" of snow this afternoon and the panic is on. It has prompted schools to close for half day today (and probably tomorrow also) and Delta has already cancelled about 150 flights.

We are accustomed to cold weather up here, but have to say, when the temperature in Florida gets below 40*F it feels like it's 40 below zero up here. One thing for sure, the price of Florida fruits will skyrocket.

Earth's larger form (not from) of global warming occurred 250 millions years ago. A meteor hit Siberia breaking the earth's crust releasing huge amounts of lava, still there, and CO2. But the debris in the air caused a long cold spell killing many plants. But weren't that many plants back then either as the earth was still forming, lots of lava and rocks. The CO2 caused the average temperature to increase by 5*C, not really that much to cause much damage, but over a 20,000 year period, managed to warm up the oceans that caused normally frozen methane hydrate to dissolve releasing mega tons of methane, a real global warming substance. That increased the average temperature by another 5*C that was enough to kill just about 95% of the animal and plant life on this planet. But a mammal survived this and may well be our forefather. This cycle took 80,000 years, if you believe Al Gore, if you do not buy a hybrid car today, you will die tomorrow. We won't debate the difference between a hybrid and a conventional car has compared to a meteor striking the earth. Some estimate, equal to a billion atomic bombs dropped on Japan.

But Al Gore stands to make billions with his interest in green companies if he can pass along his BS, unfortunately, Obama believes him, maybe he will make billions too.

"Cold snap gripping Gulf states threatens Fla. crop
By JEFFREY COLLINS Associated Press Writer The Associated Press

Wednesday, January 6, 2010 4:41 AM EST

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Florida farmers worked to salvage millions of dollars worth of crops and sun-seeking tourists were met with chilly temperatures expected to last through the weekend as an unusual Southern cold snap gripped the Gulf states on Wednesday.

A hard freeze warning was issued along the Gulf Coast, including most of Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Forecasters say the dangerously cold air mass could force temperatures into the teens in parts of the region by Thursday.

Subfreezing temperatures along with heavy snow also hit parts of New England and created treacherous roads. In western New York, a woman and her infant daughter were killed late Tuesday when their car slid and slammed into a sport utility vehicle towing a trailer with two snowmobiles along a snow-covered roadway.

In central and south Florida, farmers were trying to salvage citrus and vegetable crops by spraying them in protective layers of ice and covering them in plastic. Florida Gov. Charlie Crist signed an executive order Wednesday that gave the state's Division of Emergency Management and other agencies the authority to provide farmers with assistance.

Weather in the South this time of year is typically chilly for just a day or two before temperatures rebound into the 50s. Many homes weren't built to handle such cold, with uninsulated pipes and heat pumps that must continuously run to keep things barely comfortable.

Miami Meteorologist Dan Dixon said Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach were expected to approach or set record-low overnight temperatures Wednesday morning. The game-time temperature for the Orange Bowl between Georgia Tech and Iowa was 49 degrees in Miami, which FOX-TV announcers said was a record for the annual college football game that started in 1935.

Vacationing college students from Ohio, Tara McCourry and Stephen McFarren, walked hand-in-hand along picturesque Pensacola Beach Tuesday, one of the few people braving the 27-degree wind chill. The couple watched pelicans, admired seashells and adjusted their hats and gloves as they buffered themselves against the wind.

"This is my first time in Florida and Florida is not supposed to be cold like this," McCourry said.

Charleston, S.C., was expecting subfreezing overnight lows all week. Parts of West Virginia could see 4 to 8 inches of snow by Wednesday morning. A dusting of snow fell in western and central Kentucky overnight, heralding 3 to 5 inches expected in those areas, with some locally heavier amounts.

Cold weather has moved across the eastern U.S., leaving behind record snowfall in some areas. In northeast Ohio, another 5 to 6 inches of snow fell Tuesday in an area already covered by 2 feet of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

Police in Erie County, N.Y., said Stephanie Ali, 22, lost control of her car Tuesday evening and crossed over into oncoming traffic in Grand Island, northwest of Buffalo near Niagara Falls. Ali and her 5-month-old daughter were killed. Investigators said the SUV driver could not have avoided hitting her.

In Vermont, the bad weather was blamed for several car accidents on slushy, slick roadways. In Hinesburg, a police officer was investigating a single-vehicle crash on Tuesday night when his cruiser was struck from behind by a teenager driving on roads that were covered in ice because of freezing rain. Minor injuries and vehicle damage were reported."

-17.6*C is equivalent to 0*F, that's not too bad after you get -35*F, but certainly a lot warmer that -120*F at the South Pole. Had to reduce my humidistat with the -10*F weather we have been having, windows get all wet, even those super energy star double argon filled contraptions.

Really glad I installed that new furnace, have yet to hear it click into high stage mode, but keeping the house nice and warm. That closed combustion certainly is making a huge difference in the air inside of the house and my vents are working well. Roads today are like ice skating rinks.

Well it is nice to go outside in shorts and just a long sleeve shirt all day long. The white stuff they call snow look good on TV, but not on these roads. That would be a mess with all these drivers not knowing how to drive in it…….. I will be going to Fence Lake New Mexico tonight and they are having snow fall on the ground as we speak. Not looking forward for the drive at night in that snow……

Woo Hoo! A 3 day weekend!

Snowed about an inch last night. Cold enough for it to stick on many of the secondary roads. Froze solid (black ice) overnight.

Cannot get out of my subdivision. Diehards can be heard screaming the engines and spinning their tires up at the outlet to the subdivision; only to return down the hill and back home. I have seen some go for a second try with the same results.

Just got a call from a neighbor that lives up there and said we should sit in his front yard and watch the hilarious show. He said one determined wild man has hit the hill fast in 4wd and blew himself off the road and into a tree; left it there and walked home.

This is Hotlanta burbs; no salt trucks and no sand trucks for secondary roads. Currently noon on Friday at 18 degrees (7 w/ wind chill). High temps not to get above freezing for the weekend; may be froze in for while.

Things must be pretty slow when we are talking about the weather. Farmers always talk about the weather, but their livelihood depends upon it. Should farm indoors.

14 degrees F this morning with a strong wind taking the wind chill below zero. Never seen that here before.

Neighbors think I have a busted pipe (a few calls this morning). Nah, its just idiot me running a sprinkler all night down my driveway to make a good and slick sled run for playing. Time to go wake my boys up

Yes, in WI; but it is not a normal day in Atlanta.

OK, here is a very funny follow up to me icing down the driveway (yes, I have two drives and only iced one). Put your drinks down so as not to spray your monitor.

I went out early in the morning to check on icing progress. As I walked around with my coffee in hand, I found some ice that could not be seen (I thought it was a dry spot). With the surprise slip came the attempts to regain balance with 2 steps running this way, and two or three steps running that way; but with all attempts in vain my feet finally shot backward and out from under me and I am going down face first.

I hit the ground with my big belly, elbows, and wrists (still trying to save the coffee). The coffee shot out of my stainless steel mug directly into my face. So now my gut feels like I have been kicked by a mule, my elbows are burning, hot coffee in the face and the coffee creamer has clouded my vision.

There was this clanging sound of my stainless coffee mug rolling and bouncing down the hill, but the noise was staying right in front of my face. When I was finally able to refocus my senses from the pains and clear the eyes, you guessed it, I am rocketing down this iced up hilly driveway on my stomach, head first toward the street. I scrambled momentarily in vain to try and slow myself or turn so I could roll into the dry asphalt street, but just ended up going in head first and tearing up the palms of my hands coming to a stop in the middle of the street.

I got up grabbed my coffee cup and slowly did a 180 to see that no one in the neighborhood was up or out this early to witness this hilarity. As I began to assess my injuries, I could not help but think of Tim, Nick, and Karl's injuries and ailments, and began to wonder if I was going to be adding myself to this list of the healing. I am happy to report other than scratched palms and a bruise on one elbow, I seem to have survived this episode to laugh about it.

Kids loved it...
