Sometimes cars don't get the credit they deserve when new, or were once well known and then get forgotten about. The separate chassis midsize Fords of 1972-79 had a nice ride, handling compromise and went well with the 400M V8. Which other deserving cases, import and domestic, can you recall?

This is one car I really dreamed about owning, price was $475.00, I had $200.00 saved, but my mom couldn't get approved for a loan of $275.00 so I never got it. Was one of the saddest days in my life.

Could buy this one now, seller didn't list the price, but guessing its over $475.00

For the life of me, I can't understand why someone would order a Cougar XR-7 like that with no options. Might as well have bought the Pinto. The wind-up windows wouldn't be so bad if it at least had A/C.

If you're gonna order that car, you order it with the 400 V-8, power windows, power seats, recliners, AM/FM/CB and 8-track tape player, cruise control, automatic climate control, gauge package... the works. What a waste of a classic...

I had one of these sweet machines as a kid. Ran it into the ground and it kept kicking. 258 6 cyl, a/c. Was a great kids car in AZ.

Back then, AC for me was for wimps, chrome was wind resistance, had to come off. That 53 still used a flat head V-8 that would have to come out, a Pontiac OHV was a good drop in with over bored cylinders. Did all that to a 54 Olds two door hardtop Holiday 88, but can't even post a photo of it, didn't have a camera back then nor knew anyone that did. dual exhaust with headers and dual quads were a necessity. None of that power stuff.

Today, as a daily driver, a four cylinder is enough for me, with a town loaded with Home Security cops, spend more time driving in reverse than any other gear. Cavalier is very basic, only options on it are AC and cruise control, wind up windows work all the time. Was hesitant about buying that 2012 Cruze 2LT, it came loaded with all that power stuff, even the new Caddies don't have much more than that.

Just view that as very little extra convenience and more headaches. Stayed away from the LTZ, only comes with an automatic transmission and climate control, just more headaches. But the 2LT is almost just as bad with all soft touch controls and even with a manual blower, uses one of those way overpriced power Mosfet blower controls. Then stuck with ABS, traction control, and that overprice tire monitoring system. And stuck with a radio that picks up XM and has OnStar that I can keep on working for only an extra 500 bucks per year.

Ha, getting lazy, if I open the hood and can't see the ground, not interested.

You know, I think they would have chosen those options, who wouldn't say no to them? But it was the fuel crisis years and the economy wasn't too solid, plus inflation and insurance were a real bitch if you pardon my french! So yeah, and remember a/c and all those options were pretty expensive back in the day. You could virtually double a car's price.

Gas crisis was also no amigo of the rotary cars. Great acceleration even with a thermal reactor, but gas mileage sucked royally, lol. Those RXs had pretty good factory a/c btw.

Found this one on the bay for only $45K.

Back then, that 52 Merc was at Jim Moran's the Courtesy man in Chicago, but recall his salesman weren't very courteous. So I went up to Knauz Motors in Lake Forest. Only thing they had that was even close to my price range was a 1948 all black Chrysler New Yorker, had around 40 K miles on it, seat covers, and brand new tires. So I got that for $65.00.

Heck, at the time, it beat walking. Drove that New Yorker for a couple of years and put around 27K miles on it. But had to deal with peer pressure, had a foul mouth back then, just said, FY, beats walking. But then I found a 54 Olds Holiday coupe that was customized, beautiful white and dark blue Naugahyde interior with pin striping for 350 bucks. Was able to sell that New Yorker for 175, borrowed hundred bucks from a buddy with the 75 bucks I had in my pocket.

But that left a trail of black smoke, paid off my buddy, saved another hundred, pulled the engine, had the crank turned, and the cylinders bored out 1/16", then had a fine running machine. Can you believe a full overhaul gasket set was $3.50 back then? New pistons were like a couple of bucks each.

Could try to be like that Fast N' Loud guy, make all kinds of excuses and try to pick up that 52 convertible for around $25K, hell there is an economic crunch on right now, you will never get $45K for this thing. Then I have to make a profit.

But if I do, would have to drive back to my old town to learn if that full service gas station is there that sold Ethel leaded gas. Sure in the hell can't put this ethanol crap in a car like this, the entire fuel system would melt away.

Do avoid that Iolo car show each year, one of the largest in the world only 60 miles away, may end up buying something I can't even drive. Was there is an old military buddy about eight years ago. He really is a die hard for this old stuff, said fun to look at it, but no longer practical. I still like to look. Now, if I was Jay Leno, just have to remember all those old jokes.
