"Best of ACKits" - A proposal

Bigchris on Mon February 16, 2004 12:33 PM User is offline

One of the most endearing traits of ACKit's forums has been the educationally rich content of some of it's threads. Unfortunately, over time, those threads tend to disappear into the archives and become ever more difficult to find because there is so much other material there. Another problem is that photos included with those threads may disappear because they are not stored on Tim's servers. A classic example might be this one, Mufflers and there are many others.

My proposal is that we create a "Best of ACKits" forum section as a permanent repository for some of these classic threads. Members would propose candidate threads for inclusion in this section. I would favor judicious pruning of individual comments that do not contribute materially to the main subject of each thread. Perhaps the moderators could collaborate in the pruning to assure that what remains truly represents "the best".

So that is the gist of it. Any comments, pro and con, as well as proposed thread candidates by name and number would be appreciated.

Well that would just about eliminate everyone then what?

I would suggest starting with current posts as the archived posts do not allow me to move them back into live forums. I turned off all archiving but that does not help with the posts previously archived. We should be able to post a link to the archived threads so its not a total loss.

Don't take life seriously... Its not permanent.

True, but it doesn't address capturing the photos or separating the wheat from the chaff in individual threads.

IE supports capturing complete threads, html and graphics, as a file and an associated folder. Would it be feasible to use this capability to reconstruct an old thread in a new forum? Just thinking aloud...

I feel the best of the best should be rewritten and posted in the Automotive A/C Procedures and Tips section of this site in an attempt not to answer the same questions over and over again. Some general guidelines should be given to posting a question in terms of the known history of the vehicle, was any previous work done, was the vehicle converted, what type of climate control does the vehicle have, auto, or manual, did the problem come on gradual or was it working great yesterday and not working at all today, etc. This would help in trying to dig out this information that make some of threads very long.

I posted my share of drawings and photos, but as that thread got buried deep in the pits, had to remove those from my server as I only have limited space.

As Chick says, LOL, the above is just my opinion. With another section to the front page, I have to scroll down now.

I can at least partially agree with your suggestions. I'd look at the FAQ as an easy first step to "take inventory" and after we know what we've got we'd be in a better position to judge how much effort we want to put into polishing it. I noticed your fuel pump picture was gone but your clutch adjusting tools were still up. That was one of the things that got me thinking about preserving photos. Another was the discovery that the photos showing that a Jeep is built around its evaporator are gone.

I have that photo of the fuel pump in my files, I even kept the old fuel pump, 100 bucks for that toy motor, but GMTech told me I should have driven 100 miles to my nearest Autozone store, the net prices I found on a Delco were in the 120 buck range plus shipping and waiting a month to get it. I didn't take a picture of that damper, nothing wrong with the old one except the rubber grommets were dried out, and you can't buy those grommets. The tube just slides into these grommets and that is suppose to hold that toy motor in place. The instructions that came with the pump with an included piece of hose and real clamps said to use those if your pump did not have that damper. I liked that hose and clamps, at least it would be a firm mounting, but couldn't find out from anyone why some pumps use a damper and other don't. I didn't want to drop that tank again, so spend 30 bucks on that stupid little damper, it did press on the tubing ends with a tad more difficulty than the old one.

When posting a picture, you are just inserting a link into the text, can be any link anywhere in the world, at times I find a photo on the web, right click on it, hit properties, and copy and paste that link into the text using that little picture icon. But if that site is closed down for any reason, that photo is history, I believe that call that cyber land.

If the pictures are going to stay with the post, Tim would have to provide server space so those photos could be uploaded to it and that link to that photo inserted or use some kind of program like Word or Outlook where the photo becomes part of the text document. This may require more than a 10 Mbyte hard drive, plus some kind of password protection would have to be used or anyone can get in there and mess things up. Photos are nice, save thousands of work, but it's up to our host how he wants to deal with this.

It looks to me like our host has dealt with this very handily! I just hope that folks will have a look at their photos with a browser to ensure they're sized properly before uploading them.

That and I hope you won't get any ideas about that video you and Paris Hilton made!

Who is Paris Hilton?

Thanks BigChris, we can't do everything but I saw that it would be a benefit for all of us. Like I have said many times this site is all of ours and I want it the way the members would like to see it. That is except for Nick who wants an automatic typing and scrolling device setup for him.

I've noticed that! I figure either his girlfriend has been spoiling him or he's heard that Andy Rooney is thinking of retiring.
