How many miles on YOUR Astro?

GM Tech on Tue March 23, 2004 8:01 PM User is offline

I was just wondering- I have 289,000 on my wife's 94 (W-engine) Astro van- have replaced the water pump and tranny once and the alternator 3 times- but other than that the engine is strong- no need to add oil between changes. I have seen two others go to 330,000 before they were sold- Just heard of a buddy who saw one at over 400,000. I know the engine is good with its balanced shaft and roller lifters- and I already have the replacement engine on the garage floor when I need it- but the way it is going it may be a while. I did have the rear differential limited slip pin back out and lock up the rear wheels at 25 mph around a corner. Had to replace the unit last year. We pull a stock trailer about 1/3 of the miles. Do any of you know of how far they can go?

The number one A/C diagnostic tool there is- is to know how much refrigerant is in the system- this can only be done by recovering and weighing the refrigerant!!
Just a thought.... 65% of A/C failures in my 3200 car diagnostic database (GM vehicles) are due to loss of refrigerant due to a leak......

Too bad Chevrolet could not design that quality in the 95 Z28 I had for 12 months.

Did you get a chance to see this post? http://www.ackits.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=2&threadid=9329&FTVAR_MSGDBTABLE=

Is GM using Pro-Air or id this just a aftermarket system. Did have a buddy claim that on some of these newer vans they the rear air had the wrong blower wheel installed. Don't remember if it was CC or C but it needed they other wheel.

How is the body on that Astro? Reminds me of my 65 Buick Electra 225, it did have a rod knock at 78K, but then I decided to pull the engine and rebuild it using a static balance on all the components, the rod that did knock was entirely different than the other seven, so I found one that looked and weighed the same as the other seven. I also installed Canadian head gaskets so I could use regular gas with electronic ignition and a voltage regulator of my own design. You could drop the pan on that thing to change the rope seal, but we won't talk about that. A piece of cardboard on the garage floor was the final cure. Outside of that, put 330K on that car and it was still running strong when I sold it, the AT was indestructible as was the AC system in that car. The reason why I sold it, even though the interior and exterior looked good, was under body rust, not much left of the floorboard, inner fenders, and trunk pan. That was my main car and had to be good. GM cars after that still ran good, but they rusted out much quicker and sold to someone that didn't care. GM rust!

Who said the Japs invented the 200K engine? LOL, the Japs don't know how to build a rust proof car either.

Body is in great shape- just some dents from normal wife's driving- mailbox, wheelbarrow, tree limb conflicts.

I just arrived in Mexico City- am on a mission to investigate noise concerns on a car I've never seen- The traffic is unreal here- good thing I'm not driving- My driver must do round track racing on the weekends- and demo derbys at night!!! I guess this is what you get in the world's most populated city- I hear it is 28 million. Oh well - the beer is good!!

Ha, with all those cars running around, how is anyone sure which car is making that noise? LOL, it's when a vehicle doesn't make any sounds at all is when it's time to be concerned.
