In most cases you can Charge to R12 specs when using a true PF condenser.

If you did not get all of the flushing agent out of the system. It could have broken down the oil and caused a failure.

Your not going to find OEM specs on a 71 Chevelle with R134a. So obviously your going to have to guess at refrigerant levels. There is no specific pressures one can use in this situation. What's the low side pull down to at high idle. For an TXV type system, 35psi seems a little high.
